Moving from Project X to Modus

Recommended Posts

I’m looking to change my iron shafts and would like some advice. I currently play mp-67s with project x 6.5 shafts. I’ve played them for a few season but want some more feel with my irons. They’re ok when I’m swinging well and get to play for consecutive days but they can be laborious when I pick them up after a week to ten days off and can feel too boardy. I’ve read that the modus 120 retain a nice amount of stiffness in the tip but the softer handle and mid section give more feel.
My question is would you recommend the 120 x or 120 tx. I currently carry my 6 iron (32*) about 200-205 yards on nice strikes. Not sure on 6 iron chs but my driver is about 120 but can crank one to 124ish. On iron swings I have a fairly moderate tempo and don’t hold onto lag a la Sergio.

i understand ideally hitting these shafts would be ideal but that’s not an option unfortunately.

Cheers

All the Nippons will be noticeably softer, the TX would be my recommendation:

I would try both the x and tx.  If the point of moving to modus is to get more feel, the x will feel much better than the tx.    The x gets plenty of tour play.   The tx feels like a completely different shaft.  Feels similar to a more linear x100.

(I’ve played sets with both and have similar club dynamics)

Thanks for the input, it seems in line with what the graph above says also. Can I ask which you ended up preferring and did you see any major differences in ball flight or spin between the two.

Thanks for the graph. Correct me if I’m wrong but does that show the X as having a stiffer tip than that TX.

yes, that last section is stiffer, but the rest of the shaft is softer - notably. I'd get a test club put together with an X and a TX to see what it does to your timing, and sense of feel. Quite a change from the 6.5's.

I prefer the x.  It spins a little more and flys a little higher.  Carry is a bit less than the tx on perfect strikes, however I notice the x is more versatile and is friendly on days my body is not feeling quite 100%.   You do have to be smoother in your transition at the top.

Agree with this.  The x and tx have a much more low, penetrating flight compared to the px 6.5, particularly in the shorter irons.

i would have to agree with bmyles

in fittings both PX and modus 120 would produce best, albeit slightly different results.  the PX i felt like i couldn't over power the club (my chs roughly similar to yours) but my swing is very aggressive and for better or worse prefer to go at it when im playing vs a smoother 75 - 80% effort as stock swing.  I would get best results with modus 120 when going 75 -80% of swings.  problem with modus would be ball flight that would balloon with tons of spin when tempo was off

i tried modus 120 tx and it was noticeably stiffer than the X, but my smash factor was down on it.  I had similar issues tried C Taper, where ball flight very consistent but smash down so not loading shaft properly

Based on what you are looking for (playing multiple days, easier club to swing) you might like the modus 120, i would probably avoid the TX.  I have also had good results with $ taper that you could try in S+ that is a pleasure to swing with sa little more spin that the px6.5 at least for me

Modus 120 in general is a unique shaft in that it's tip stiff but gets softer in the mid and handle.  Feels a lot smoother than PX.  Because of the different feel, it may throw off your delivery into the ball so test it before making any final decisions.  I find the Modus 130 to be more similar in terms of launch/spin to the PX while still retaining feel so that's another option you want to consider as well.

Like you I have been looking for something smoother after playing PX 6.5 and 6.0 for a long time. Tried Modus 120 X and Modus 130 S for a season. Both produced similar ball flights for me, but Modus 130 will feel more similar to PX. They were both higher spin than I was looking for and neither were ideal replacements for PX. Tried 130X and just don't have the swing speed for it. I would recommend staying close to the same weight. Personally I like $ Taper 125 and PX LZ 6.5. I don't think it's any coincidence both are 125 gm shafts.

I have played Project X 6.5 for a few years and I can definitely confirm that Project X 6.5 and Modus 120 X are polar opposites of each other so I could never imagine the same player playing both shafts, the Modus 120 X felt almost noodle soft when I hit them but I haven't hit the 120 TX, the Modus 130 X are much stouter but also feel much better than PX 6.5 so those would be one Nippon shaft to test out, a few tour players including Sergio have played both PX 6.5 and Modus 130 X at various times.

will add i have liked hitting the LZ as well during fittings, felt great, but super high launch for me.  I think you might run into simliar issue if you try modus 130 that has softer tip and for most people will increase launch - not sure what you are trying to avoid re ball flight
