ZX4 MK 2/ZX7 OG Combo Set

Most of the threads I’ve read regarding the Srixon ZX combo sets have been ZX5/ZX7 or the ZX4/ZX5. I haven’t read too many threads about the ZX4/ZX7 combo set so I thought it might be of interest to some regarding my experience going this direction.

I’m in my mid-sixties and play to a five handicap.  I typically play tee boxes which range from 6500-6800 yards.   My 150–153-yard club is an 8 iron.  The shaft I have in my irons are the Nippon Modus 105 in stiff.

I went to a fitting a month ago to try the new MK 2 irons.  The iron they had to demo was a seven iron.   I did like the ZX7 Mk II a lot.  A little softer and longer (2-3 yards) than the OG ZX7.  Didn’t like the ZX5 MK 2.  Didn’t hit it as well as the ZX7 and the feel was off.  Some say they are clicky – I would use the phrase “duller on feel”.  Didn’t plan on hitting the ZX4 MK 2 until I looked at it.  As many have said, Srixon did a great job with the upgrade on this one.  What surprised me was the feel and dispersion.  Not far from the ZX7’s in feel and equal on dispersion.  I was concerned with the sole of the ZX4 MK 2 prior to hitting it.  After hitting it, not so much.

I didn’t do anything that day but came home to do more research.  I was curious about getting more help with my long irons – the 4 and 5.  It’s not that I’m bad with these irons, but I’ve had rounds in which only 50% of the shots are good and the other 50% could be dreadful.   I decided to keep my current set of OG zx7’s as the MK 2 performance was on par with the MK I.   Since I didn’t like the ZX5 MK 2 irons my choice was either the OG ZX5 or the ZX4 MK 2.   Looking at what Mark Crossfield has in his bag surprised me when he is gaming the ZX4 MK 2 and not even in the long irons.  I thought If he is gaming this club, and he is a really good golfer, should I take this leap of faith.

I decided to get the ZX4 MK 2 in the 4 and 5 iron.  So far so good.  I’m hitting the clubs longer (due to the lofts) but also higher.  These things just want to go straight.  They aren’t as workable as the ZX7.  However, I would take more forgiveness with the long irons than needing the once in a great while workability shot.  Two times at the range and once on the course I can see that my good hits are now in the 80%-85% range.     I ordered the 5 iron 1 degree week to 24 degrees.  So, the gaps are zx4 4 – 21 degrees, ZX4 5 – 24 degrees, zx7 6- 28 degrees.  Just for reference, the iron distances are 6 – 177, 5 – 192, 4 -205 give a yard or two.

Glad I got over my concerns and went in this combo direction.  I know I will be saving strokes at the end of the day.
