Maltby KE4 For Beginners?

Recommended Posts

I’ve seen a lot of raving about Maltby irons value for the money, so I placed an order for the STi2s and a SW through them. All I need is a 5 Wood and 4 Hybrid to complete my first set ever. I’m a complete beginner. I had the intention of picking up a “good” quality Mavrik 5W and 4H, however being 6’4” and needing some customization and the costs associated, there’s a solid difference in price (25%) between the used Mavriks and getting KE4 Tour TC hybrid and wood. Being brand new to the game (literally only 1 round), would it be better to just roll with the KE4 from Maltby for cheaper and fully customized? Or would the Mavriks last me longer?

At this point in your golfing journey and being a member of this website, there’s not a doubt you’ll change clubs soon 🤣

anyhow, being a beginner just familiarizing yourself with the game is the most important piece. The Maltby’s are more cost effective and you won’t be getting an inferior quality club.

I've been playing since the 1980's.  My current setup is a Maltby KE4 Tour 16* 4W with the MPF Pro Series shaft.  I wouldn't change it for anything unless I got an OEM for free or the same price.  The price and performance are 2nd to none.  The sound on the 4W is really nice too.   I also game the 21* Hy-Way UW and the wedges.  Which SW did you get BTW?  The PAK with the Kuro Kage shaft is the same price.  The Kuro Kage shaft would help better with higher launch angle to get the ball in air better.

I had my S-I-L get the STi2's.  I borrowed them for a round and there are some really nice feeling and performing clubs.  They will serve you well for many years until you get starry eyed and want to spend $1,500 on 7 irons.

I got the standard Maltby MAX Milled Wedge pak for the SW. I didn’t know what the difference between the shafts were and went with that one since it was cheaper. Is there that much of a difference? My order hasn’t shipped yet so I may get to swap it.

Thanks for the information! Helping make my decision. It’s starting to seem a no brainer for my first set to just go 100% Maltby.

I have that shaft in my 56* TSW DRM wedge.  It's a good shaft.  I would leave it be.  It's stable and performs really well.  The shaft comment was for the fairway woods. LOL.  When I'm at work I tend to jam as much as I can from what's in my head the quickest way possible.  LOL.

I'm ordering the 54* and 58* max milled with Mitsubishi Kuro Kage shafts because I just got a brand new set of irons from my kids for Christmas/Birthday present and they have the Mitsubishi MMT graphite shaft in them.  I want all graphite now. LOL

The Maltby stuff will last and is quality.  The question is do you slice, hook or hit 'em straight, because if you slice, there are better options than the KE4 Tour TC that are draw biased.

I have only ever played 1 round with a standard size (based on my measurements I need them extended) set of clubs rented from the club that they got from their basement, but I did slice right a ton. I also don't even have a proper swing developed yet so there's that.

Another one in the hat is a used Taylormade Sim 2 MAX (4H and 5W) that I found used on sell in "very good" condition for a similar price as the maltbys. Just would have an extra cost associated for going to get them extended.

While you're learning to play and developing a swing, try to avoid anything that is "draw biased" and play stuff that is set up in a more neutral setting. Better to start your swing journey in a neutral setting, that way you can build the swing without having to overcompensate for a "draw biased" club with a super closed face. That way your progress is to get the swing to hit the ball straight instead of the equipment having too much influence.

Maltby is completely legit; really good stuff at a reasonable price.

The only potential drawback is if you want to eventually sell or trade-in the values are low. But you pay less to begin with so I think that’s a moot point.
Unfortunately, a manufacturer’s presence on Tour largely drives secondary market values.
