Prosendr- Sean Foley on right arm bend?

Recommended Posts

Posted (edited)

I have the pro sender coming tomorrow. I’ve been watching all of the videos in preparation. I’ve noticed that Sean Foley often says “forget this nonsense about the right arm needing to be bent through impact”. In fact, he goes as far to say that they want the feeling that you’re releasing your right hand, wrist, and arm through the ball.
I don’t see any good players doing that. I see a lot of bent right arms maintaining the right wrist through impact.
I should also say in full disclosure that I am no fan of Sean Foley’s but I do detect that he has grown as a teacher from the days when he was working with Tiger Woods.
Am I misunderstanding pretty much wrongly or is he right and I’m wrong?

I don’t see really good players dumping their angles by extending the right arm to get width in the downswing.
I see trail shoulders going down, and geometry says if the right shoulder goes down the right arm will need to have some bend in order to maintain some shaft lean.

I wonder if Sean Foley is saying this as a response to his over emphasis of shaft lean when he was working with tiger- which many thought was to the detriment of some of his players.

Maybe he’s going too far in the opposite direction?

According to hackmotion most pros have 60+ degrees of trail wrist bend and at impact somewhere around 10-20 degrees so they are losing trail wrist bend rapidly coming into impact.

It’s a byproduct of the sequencing of their bodies. Some people who actively try to throw right wrist bend away may have to feel like they are holding it forward however if they actually did they would swing above the ball and miss the ball by about a foot.

Don't know much about Foley but I do drills glueing the right elbow to the right side to keep it in front of me.  Forces a good turn.  It will become unglued as I get to impact.  Also feels like it helps me drop the club into the "slot" in transition instead of coming over the top.

Pros have much straighter trail arms at the top of the backswing and through transition. The body responds by turning through the shot better, which holds trail arm bend  Amateurs often have an over-bent trail arm at the top of the backswing and through transition, leading to the body stalling and the trail arm rapidly straightening late.

An analogy would be a baseball pitch or a football throw. Trying to move the distal segments fast leads to some serious body rotation as a result. Trying to "tuck things in" leads to unathletic motions.

Also, some of the right wrist bend maintained through impact is due to the forces applied on the shaft by a divot.

Interesting

for me- a high right shoulder and straightening right arm is bad-

this is a great response which I’m going to sit with a minute

I do a “better’s player” version of this. I’m having to learn how to get the right shoulder down in the downswing.

interestingly, I’m learning arm structure has a lot to do with wrist conditions

Want to know how to get the right elbow in front of you: straighten both elbows.

The trail elbow is extending (as is the lead wrist) through impact.

In my own swing, I can't extend my right elbow too quickly. A lot of ams you see with a trail elbow that's extended fully before impact… do so because they turned, then have to stall the pivot to straighten the arms. They're often also pulling their chest back away from the ball (while the pelvis moves toward the ball), also requiring the trail elbow to extend fast before their chest pulls back too far.

This isn't super bent:

I agree, thank you for the explanation.   In this drill I do, keeping that elbow glued to my side, prevents me from moving away from the ball.  I have to turn correctly or I'll miss the ball completely.   My elbow does come off my side as I come through.  With your explanation and photos now I know why and it's ok for that to happen.
