swing mechanics vs. feel.....

Recommended Posts

do you think or feel when you swing?
I see alot of technical aspects of the swing discussed in this forum, which is great. But when it comes down to actually excecuting a shot, we cannot view ourselves from dtl,in slow motion, with all the plane lines drawn in;p
It's important to know in which manner we are attempting to swing the golf club. And what our body has to do to accomplish it. But we have to connect our technique to the way it feels to excecute the shot,IMOP.
I feel like the golf club has a way of TELLING YOU how it wants to be swung, and furthermore has a way of balancing in a near weightless fashion when swung correctly,IMOP. To me, I can't concentrate on my technique too much while I'm playing, all I can do is get set up as correctly as possible, and "search" for that weightless feeling from the club as I swing. And if I find it, then thats the club telling me iv'e executed.
Anyone else feel the the same way, or not?

I would not describe feel the way you do but I think its the same thing. Simply stated its seeing the shot with your eyes or your maind before you hit it, that and trusting your vision.

I have always been very good at this tee to green and not worth a darn around the greens and putting. I often catch myself thinking how hard I need to hit a putt or a chip or pitch. Or thinking about what technique I need for a certain pitch. I do so much better of course when I just visualize it and let it happen

I am pretty good at leaving mechanics on the range for my long game but not so good with my short game truth or dream I believe in my youth my short game and putting kept me from having a chance as a big time player.

If I had understood it better thirty five years ago I could have developed my short game a lot better. Now I understand it and do not have the time to practice it.

To understand all this you have to understand the difference between a concious and uncouncious state of doing things.

Golf is played best in and unconcious state what is referred to as the zone I believe is a super unconicous state.

Nice post I am glad you started the thread and look forward to hearing from others.

Textbook sound fundamentals promotes good rhythm, tempo, feel.

I've not met a good golfer yet that thinks his way through the shot. He thinks during practice - but when playing it's course management, fundamentals and exicution. I am a feel player that is a visual learner.

You have the right idea regarding an emphasis on address position (set up).

If the address position is sound then a good looking effective swing will naturally follow. No need to ever think about anything during the swing.

thats exactly what I was going to say. I think a whole lot on practice days. . .constantly analyzing everything. but when I'm playing, I wittle it down to one or two swing thoughts, then get target focused. if the swing thoughts stop working, which happens all to often, I focus on tempo, but always stay focused on target and I NEVER try to fix anything during a round.

A quote by one of the all time great instructors of the game,ERNEST JONES comes to mind."your own power destroys the golf swing"

NOT necessarily.........Mr. Jones was an Old School "let the clubheead swing and the body react" (the OUTSIDE controlled the INSIDE).......but, you can't try and "muscle it" either.......a good golf swing is simply a number of parts working together in a synchronized fashion so as to create a consistent IMPACT ZONE.........there are a LOT of methods that can, if ingrained, produce just that......some better than others and some better for one than another......just gotta' figure out what is right for you.....that's we're ALL on our own "golf journey"........:)

I keep the fundamental mechanics in mind before the swing. However, when I'm ready to pull the trigger I only focus on tempo and putting the clubface's sweetspot on the ball. No matter how poorly I am swinging if I accomplish a decent tempo and strike the ball on or near the center of my clubface I usually get good results.
