Interesting 1 iron

was in my storage, looking for an '80s MacGregor 7 iron (didn't find any) & thru my stash of 1 irons...found this interesting 1 iron (amongst othrs) - a Hawkeye 1iron that says "Performance By Design on the top back, the number 1 & Pro Drive on the sole, and Scotland on the hosel...the shaft band just says "Apollo made in England" and the grip is a Golf Pride made in US & "Pro Drive" down the grip itself.

Any info on the maker, time etc would be greatly appreciated...

This will be nothing you don't know.

 

Heel design + lack of a ferrule + offset + name (Hawkeye) = Ping Eye 2 homage imo.

The Eye 2 came out in 1982, so I guess it could be anytime from then.

Calcavecchia won the Open Championship with Eye 2's in 1989.

@EvanH  yup, you're right on...I did recognize the similarity to the Ping Eye (more than the Eye2)....the "Scotland" on the hosel, the Apollo made in England shaft band indicate a UK origin...I could find no data on "Hawkeye" or "Pro Drive". So was hoping one of the across the Eastern pond might have an idea.... @Jiggered has an excellent YouTube site where the Apollo shafts have been mentioned in the description of clubs prior to going out & playing.

just for grins, "Hawkeye" is also the term used by the Gaelic Athletic Assoc. in their Irish Hurling & Gaelic Football games for "instant replay" (refs at goals can't determine if the sliothar or the football has gone between the goal posts - takes about 30 seconds)...

Ping Eye 2 knockoff.  They were being churned out cheaply under many different brand names in the 80s and 90s

I realize that that, please read my actual question, based on all the "signs" this was produced in the UK...does anyone have an idea?

The Apollo shaft does hint to UK production, but not as much as the big SCOTLAND on the hosel!

 

Apollo shafts were exported to America but I agree that this is a UK produced club.

I'd say that Pro Drive is the name of the company but I can't find anything about them.  Howson produced a model called Prodrive for a while but the graphics look different.

Apollo was UK based, have Cobra woods with them, it's a good shaft.

Thanks, I thought you might have some info....the first link pictures show an almost exact match for what I have...except the logo in the cavity...all else matches. The 2nd link just uses a different script, makes me wonder...

For grins I have a putter marked "Hawkeye", kinda sorta reminds me of a "spur" putter, no idea who made it...the shaft band is a Bristol Built Pro-Flex (which is not realy informative, as Bristol made excellent shafts for quite a number of companies) & the grip is red leather in perfect shape w/an end-cap that says "Tri (above a "V") Traction (across the "V")...
