An Antithesis to the 3 Swing Challenge

I can understand the logic and spirit of "The Three Swing Challenge." We've all swung a club or two in our time that we never wanted to swing again - the R15 driver comes to my mind in this respect. Ugh. 

 

But seriously, who besides tour pros, industry insiders, or the fabulously wealthy can enact this approach? I can't test everything. My swing is inconsistent. If I swing a major OEM club, I can tell if I like it or not, but if I'm hitting bad shots - that's on me. That isn't the club. 

 

So, for those of us who aren't tour pros and don't have access to unlimited testing - I think the "Three Swing Challenge" mentality is pretty goofy. How in god's name are we to know what might work best for us? We are merely throwing darts at a board and hoping they stick. 

 

What happens when those new clubs come in, and our first few swings are crap? How about when it extends for a few weeks? Do we just cut our losses and move on? Or do we dig in and learn the club?

 

I'd argue for learning the club. For most of us amateur golfers, this will provide an impetus to practice more. Learn to hit those clubs. You will be a better golfer as a result.

I dont think thats the intent of it. Its merely a first impression type thing. Maybe some tidbits to narrow down things you may want to try.

it comes from Barney Adams (from Adams Golf) on how he understands fitting:  

"My formula as a fitter was three shots only. I discounted No. 1 just because it was the first one, counted 100 percent of No. 2 and discounted No. 3 because the player was starting to adjust."

As above, i thought it was a fitting thing not a purchase thing. 

 

Would get expensive that way.  And adds a new thought to buying at second swing.
