How to practice keeping head "still" during swing?

During backswing, forward lean towards the ball
Had a free 10-minute video swing analysis at a local golf store promotion last night. The instructor (and video) pointed out that when I bring the club back, my head moves toward the ball, a lean forward. This results in an over the top approach to the ball, swinging outside the "pane of glass" on the downswing. This despite feeling in balance throughout the swing and being in a good balanced position at finish. The instructor had me swing while lightly touching my forehead to help me detect the forward lean, and even though I felt like I was doing it correctly, my head still wanted to move towards the ball. Any advice/tips/drills to help correct this move? I've been practicing Slice's 9 to 3 drill, the first day I was amazed how well I was striking the ball, with what felt like good compression to me. The next few range sessions still not too bad, but not as good as before. Perhaps I wasn't rotating as much the subsequent days.

Maybe the tie drill would help you. Wear a tie. At the top of your takeaway the tie should be hanging not laying on your chest. One thing to be aware of is avoiding a lower body sway when you are thinking about the move.

You still want to do the nice centered body turn.

If you use the setup that slicefixer describes and just rotate your trunk on the spine angle you setup at address it should naturally lead to a hanging tie.

Maintain the kicked in angle of your back leg. Straightening that leg on the takeaway can push your body towards the target.

I used to do the same thing. This drill helped me eliminate that move.

There once was an aid called the swinghat -- it was great for this -- but I see the website is no longer around (swinghat.com)

If your head moved too much, it would buzz you and you could dial in the sensitivity.

I still have mine -- guess I'll keep it -- it works.

Where is the weight on your feet at set-up? Could it be too much towards the heels? There are many varying opinions on this, but I have always liked the weight more towards the balls of the feet, or at the very least, the middle of the feet. If your weight starts too much towards the heels, it may be moving up towards the balls during your swing. Just one possibility...

i agree. without seeing it, it seems as if you are getting onto the front of your feet and leaning forward. you should test this by having someone testing your balance at set-up and throughout the rest of the swing by applying pressure to your back and sides at set-up. it really sounds as if its a problem in setup and posture....good luck.

I would be more concerned with your head moving up and down, rather than moving around a bit -- you don't want it to remain still -- it can move back and forth a couple of inches - but up and down is a no-no.

Check your posture to make sure the head doesn't go up and down -- no hunching allowed.

Early in hand photos of the new GT2 models t the truck.  As soon as they show up on the range in player's bags we'll get some better from the top photos and hopefully some comparison photos against the last model.
