Took my clubs in to a local shop to get regripped

.600 shat/.580 grips

The guy told me that they measured standard, and I would need to get a ladies grip if I wanted anything smaller. ;)

I tried to tell him that the butt diameter of the shaft was "fattening" up the grip, but to no avail.

"Well, they are measuring standard so.."

Anyway, this grip set up is causing my grip to get stronger, as well as creating more tension in my hands.

I'am going to order new grips tonight and wanted to make sure .600 grips on the .600 shafts is the right set up to get rid of that fat feeling.

I would take the clubs back and tell him to look up sizing on Golf Pride

It depends on what you told him to do on the one hand. If you have a very specific preference, you need to make that clear to the club technician to make sure you end up with what you want.

 

On the other hand, I have met a few club makers/techs over the years that didn't know grips came in different sizes or were annoyed with my specific instructions. I think one in particular felt like I was telling him what to do, as though he needed my help.

 

The truth is, I was telling him exactly what to do, the alternative being that I'll do them myself. You're either in business to make money, or you're not. Anyway, any clubmaker in my opinion who takes in a set of clubs without specific instructions should look at what's on the club, then replicate it.

 

Any deviation deserves at least a courtesy call to confirm that the change would be ok. "Tom, you wanted tour velvets, but I only have 0.600 grips in stock. Can I build them up, or do you want me to order some 580s? "

 

Any club maker that would just slap some 600s on 580 shafts and tell you they measured "standard" wouldn't be up to my standard. But, in many cases, you get what you pay for.

 

When I take clubs in, I write down what I want on the work ticket. That way there is no confusion. Like when I sent a brand new set of forged irons to an outfit to remain nameless, and despite the written instructions I included in the box with the heads, they stripped and rechromed them (quite poorly) instead of enlarging the hosel bore to 370 as I had asked....

A larger grip should cause less tension in your hands because your hands dont have to clamp down.

If I was particular about grip sizing ( I am) etc I would make sure I could do it myself.( I can)

 

of course once you start regripping you are down the road of no return!

Not always. I ordered a hybrid from Titleist and requested a TV round grip. I didn't think about sizing at the time and got a 60R on a .600 shaft. I also had all my Srixon irons come with a 60R on a .600 shaft.

 

I prefer a 58R on a .600 grip because I like the +1/64.

"Men's Standard" is .900" measured 2" down from the grip cap.

 

So, to a large degree, as long as that's the spec you're looking for, who cares how the clubmaker got it there?
