Going old school(ish)
Hi all,
Here's my WITB. I currently play off an NZGA index of 8.2 and play at Paraparaumu Beach in New Zealand. I've just purchased a set of old Spalding Tour Edition blades to just mess around with. However, I hit them just as badly as my old cavity backs and they have the benefit of looking supercool so in the bag they go.

I sold my clubs (mizuno MX-20's) when I moved from the UK and upon arrival found that golf equipment was quite expensive in New Zealand so ended up with a complete set of Precept EV clubs that included a cart bag. I'm toying with the idea of going back to a carry/stand bag, but having now got used to a trundler, I might find it hard to go back (and I used to think that if you didn't carry you should be made to play off the ladies tees!).

EDIT 8/10/2008:
Out: Mactec NVG2 Tour 9deg. IN: Titleist 983K
Out: Spalding PW,SW, Ram 50deg. IN: Cleveland 900 series 48,52,56.
Out: Precept EV 3,5 Woods. IN: Taylormade 300 series Tour 4 wood.

To business ......
The Lot

Driver
I've just picked up this old 983K after my old Mactec started to feel a bit funny - couldn't quite put my finger on what it was though! It's got the stock fujikura speeder and feels really solid.

Fairway Wood
I've taken my old 3 and 5 woods out having just got this Taylormade 300 Series Tour 4 wood. This has got the stock S-90 shaft in it.I've also got a 3+ head which I may or may not put into play if I get it shafted.

Flatstick
Putting definitely used to be the weakest aspect of my game and since coming across this old Ping Anser4 it has certainly improved (I used to use a Hoganardi Big Ben). The first time i used it, I broke 80 off the back tees for the first time, so it's going to be hard to ever replace it. It's untouched i.e., 34 inches long and no lead tape.

Irons
I got these for a bit of a bargain and they are the first blades I've hit (bar the odd demo club). The first time I took them out I shot level par for the back nine (the only time I've ever done that) but since then I've struggled a bit - mainly due to trying to ingrain some swing changes. There have been recent signs of improvement which is good because summer's on the way down here! I now think this whole game improvement and super game improvement thing is a load of old tosh and just wish I'd had a go with blades when I took up the game in 2002. Pics are of the 6 iron. I've still got my old Precept EV's which I rank fairly highly too against most of the current crop of irons.

Wedges
These Tom Austin 900's (sic) are new entries to the armoury. These are my first Clevelands and I really like them so far. I've got the 48, 52 and 56deg. I'm on the look out for a low bounce 60deg to take the bag up to the full compliment of 14 clubs. Having assembled this current set completely out of second hand clubs I'm reluctant to buy a brand new wedge but we'll see.

Odds and Ends
I play Srixon AD-333's which I find to be an ideal ball for someone of my ability. They don't scuff up as easily as premium balls but they don't feel like rocks either. I currently mark them in the way shown as I let my fiancee choose the mark - I'll see how it goes. I use zero friction tees which have definitely added a few yards to my drives. On the green, I mark my ball with any coin I have handy and my snack of choice is a Cadbury's Brunch bar - unbeatable! When i'm playing a few holes on my tod I use this Callaway pencil bag, in which I normally carry driver,3w,4,6,8,P,S and the putter.

That's your lot. I spend hours on this site reading about exotic shafts, club making etc and I find it fascinating stuff. However, at the moment I don't have the funds to tinker with all that. The end result being an average bag for an average player.

Anyway, thanks for reading,
Laters!

Hi mate, love the bag.

I've bought all sorts of irons over the last ten years and eventually I've gone back to the set I had in the bag over 10 years ago (makes me wonder why I spent all that many in the first place!). I've also got the same putter, 2 iron and the same style wedges that I was using 10 years ago!. Nothing wrong with going old school. Using what works for you is the important thing.

Maybe when you have the funds, a couple of wedges and a new fairway wood or hybrid would fit in well but until then, you've got the basis of a very solid bag.

P.S I used to have that same driver (although I had a different shaft) and it's an absolute cannon. Hope you enjoy hitting it as much as I did!

Nice simple set up mate. Those Bird on Ball Spaldings were cracking irons back in the day (ask Greg Norman) and will no doubt serve you well. Very nice condition too, looking at them.

Love the basic, no-nonsense set up. A man after my own heart...

I agree. I used to have a 50deg wedge in the bag but I reckon that will now be too close to the spalding PW. I think a callaway steelhead III 4+ and a couple of vokeys/588's would be cool additions. However, in the couple of times i've taken them out I've been really impressed with the spalding SW out of the sand, so perhaps only a 60 deg would be a useful wedge addition.

Cheers for the comments guys!

that is a great setup you have there. i too just bought a set of the Spalding Tour Editions myself. I also just bought a set of BRAND NEW/NEVER HIT Top Flite Custom Made blades that are VERY similar to the Tour Edition blades. this is my 1st post on this site and i need to make a WITB page too like you did. thats so cool!

I also LOVE the Precept EV woods. I have always felt Precept was the most underrated, best kept secret in golf. I use a Precept EV 3 wood and a Precept Tour Premium 140f 5 wood thats just AWESOME. I alternate between about 7 sets of irons, but my favorites are the Spalding Tour Edition blades, Precept EC603 ProSpec blades, Precept EC603 cavity backs, and a set of Tad Moore cavity backs.

Anyway, great page you have here and a great set of clubs too! Im gonna make one of these pages for myself now!

Hi all,

Here's my WITB. I currently play off an NZGA index of 7.6 and play at Paraparaumu Beach in New Zealand. I've just purchased a set of old Spalding Tour Edition blades to just mess around with. Anyway, all that remains of that set is the fairway woods, which do the job but they'll probably be on the way out at some point.

Driver

I'm playing a Macgregor Mactec NVG2 Tour 9 degrees with the stock fujikura speeder quadra-action shaft. I previously owned a Ben Hogan CS-3 10.5deg but I used to launch that thing way too high. The Mactec gives me a much lower trajectory and my driving distance has increased due to the extra roll. This thing is also stupidly forgiving.

Irons

I got these for NZ$125 - which I reckon was a bit of a bargain and they are the first blades I've hit (bar the odd demo club). I've only managed to take them out for a few holes and they will need adjusting for loft and lie but I hit them suprisingly well. I'm beginning to think this whole game improvement and super game improvement thing is a load of old tosh and just wish I'd had a go with blades when I took up the game in 2002. I'd have to agree with my mate villa... nice bag Keep It Simple & Stupid...

There is a reason that the bags of people like Hogan,Tiger, Faldo and the like remained the same for so long...

Blades are "the ultimate game improvement club"

Great bag.

Unless I am missing something, the writing on the back of those wedges is tour action, not tom austin. :)

I love the retro setup. Blades look sharp too.

Nice irons. I was a Greg Norman fan growing up right around the time he was rocking those. I've always wanted to play at Paraparaumu - my parents live in Auckland but whenever I visit my dad and I only go to courses close by.
