Match play tournament at my club

They let women compete against men!

First of all, I would like to apologize to any women in the forum, I am not against them or playing with them, as a matter of fact, its great to do it, they are serious golfers and a joy to play with.

I would like to have your opinion on this. Every year in winter (I live in sunny Spain :blink: so we play all year round), my club have the match play championship that includes 32 players of each of three categories divided by handicap, a total of 96 players.

I belong to the C category with a 18.4 handicap, and are the former runner up of last year final, second place. This category runs all the way up to 36 handicap.

The format comprehends a qualification round with stableford points where the top 30 players qualifies plus last year champion and runner up. On each match, 75% of handicap differences are established in order to give strokes to the weakest competitor.

Well, this year, they allowed women to play against men, so 3 qualified into my division, and I had been the fortunate to play against two of them already, and I will be facing the third in the semifinals this weekend, giving 8 shots per round to each on every match.

Well, I don't know if I am wrong or not, and would not like to be seen as a macho, but I frankly do not like to play against them, first is all the strokes I need to give, second is that they are allowed to tee from the red markers (women) and I from the mens (845 meters of difference), and third is that even if I loose a hole, I need to tee up first because my tee is way back from theirs.

Finally and last, this weekend I bet a 14 years old girl and my next match is against a 12 year old! So besides allowing them to play with us, they let the juniors do it. :)

Shouldn't they, if want to compete against men, need to play in similar circumstances, from our tees? I didn't see Anika or Michele tee off from the front tees against the men, right?

I will be glad to listen to your opinions, and again, please not hard feelings against women for this.

Thanks for the opinion.

As a matter of fact, in Spain we measure the course similar to the US, with slope & raiting, and in mine, the slope for the men's tees (yellow) is 132 with a rating of 72.5; and for the women (red) the slope is 131 with a 73.6 rating, very similar. Distance for yellow tees is 5,869 meters and red is 5,024 meters.

The proble, as youlisted is how to set this up on a mix match?

Thanks, I completely agree on the order of the game, and the rule does not imply gender differences, only that the one who won the whole tees up first.

Finally and last, this weekend I bet a 14 years old girl and my next match is against a 12 year old! So besides allowing them to play with us, they let the juniors do it. :)

Oh no! A Jr!? Tell me it's not so. You know, this is something I've had to deal with ever since joining a private club 2 years ago. I see myself as a well accomplished Jr. golfer, with a 6 handicap, and a high school player, and yet I find no respect from my club what so ever. Nobody. I could give some of these guys 20 strokes and still beat them, yet I get pushed around from tee time to tee time because no one wants to play with the Jr. I've always been courteous, respectful and hold golf ethics very dear to me. In fact, I find myself fixing more ball marks and divots in one round then these guys do all year.

A little side note too. A good friend of mine competed in the Club Championship for another club (only a sophomore in high school) and ended up coming 2nd in the Champion Flight. He carded 3 low 70's and a high 60 and only came second to a mini tour player who belongs at the course, and do you know what the members thought? They thought that next year, only those who were 25 and older would be able to join. How ridiculous is that... a class act kid competing on their course, and they want to just throw him out. It's a real shame too.

Another clarification, besides playing with women, thing that I clarified since the begining that I like, I also do it with palying with Juniors, its not a problem for me, I do it with my kids regularly (11 and 10) and their friends and always enjoy it, and every time they tee me up with one in the club it has been terrific, and many of them kick my a...

Its not this issue, its more the girls and that if they want the youngest to compete, they should try to make an special division for them and not mix them with the oldest persons, specially if they are in the C category, in the lowest ones the problem should not be as bad as in mine, becasue competition is stronger, and there few girls on them.

Its not nice to play against a girl, 14 like the one I bet yesterday, win 7&6, listen to the father who was her caddie for 12 holes how a big sandbagger I was, and then look at her tears after it was over. Man, I just cannot stand it. Besides, twice she won a whole, she denied to play first, so its distance advantage, plus hadicap, plus tee up last on every f... hole!

No offense intended but I think this thread is silly. It shouldn't matter if you're playing against a girl, boy, junior, senior, alien, etc. Play golf to play the game, be courteous and respectful to ALL others that play.

I could care less who I play with/against.

If the same tees aren't played, I don't think it's appropriate for match play.

Personally, I would like to see the local associations that I play in have a few men/women tournaments. They don't yet. Tournaments such as scrambles can be fun with men and women on the same team. I played in a couple of company tournaments like that and it was fun.

I think in match play the handicaps should be thrown away.

Flight the field and have at it.l et the men play from the mens tees and the chickees play from the b*** tees

Not at all, its not about loosing to a 12 year old, its the other side, wining and feel the consequences of watching her feeling get hurt.

Sdnick, thanks for the advice, you are right, lets go and have some fun and play golf that is ht eimportant thing.

We allow this at our club in CA. We allow anyone that is over the age of 13 to compete. They must have a certified handicap.

We get several juniors and our local team has benefitted greatly from their increased exposure.

We allow the women to play from the set of tees that is 2 up from wherever we play. It has for the most part worked out fine. In match play, they must follow all the rules of match play, which means they must tee off first if they won a hole.

A few members have objected, the only real way to have it changed is to truly create a mens club with its own charter which would be inclusive of men only. In CA raise a few eyebrows with language like that so we have avoided a mens only club.

The junions play if they want, its up to them. But I will say this, of the ones that do play, the are mature enough to accept defeat.

Ok I'm confused. You are worried about her feelings getting hurt if you beat her, yet you would feel better about it if she had to play from the same tee's as you? ??? :)

Placebo, in the first palce should she be playing?

And no, I would not like her to be playing from the same tees because she could not do it. In last week's game, she was playing her match at the same time I was playing hers. And almost in all the holes I was between 50 to 100 meters further already, and there are some carry over that she could not do.

I think she should be able to play. Perhaps some adjustments are in order but it shouldn't be too difficult to accomplish. After all the HI makes it possible for players of all skill levels to compete together. That IMO is the beauty of the game.
