Anything Special I should Know

Hi Everyone,

Will be putting a set of graphite shafts in a set of irons/ my first try at graphite.

Anything different I need to know or any tips?

About the only thing I saw that I hadn't thought of was to use a scotchbrite pad to rough up the tips ratherthan sandpaper.

You can prep the tips using a flat razor blade utility knife, you just keep it 90 degrees to the shaft and scrape off the clear coat and paint, doesn't take long and you can adjust the pressure so you don't get into the fibers.

I'd suggest building them to the right length for you, not building overlength like some manufacturers do. Have some tip weights so you can get the correct swingweight. Epoxy the tip weight into the shafts, because sometimes one will break the stem off and it will rattle up and down the shaft.

Give yourself a month to adjust to the lighter overall clubweight, your fatigue will be much less and once you get used to the lighter weight your accuracy should be spot on.

This shouldn't be an issue for most all modern iron heads, but do MAKE CERTAIN your hosels are "coned" at the top to provide a cushion of epoxy around the shaft at the top of the hosel. As noted, do make the length right and fine-tune your SW with either tip weights or with lead tape. You may want to do, say, the 6-iron and check it for impact, etc. re "shaft droop" and your swing with the much lighter shafts. Good luck, it is well worth the trouble.

I'm about to re-shaft a set of AP1's with Aldila TGi 120gm S and just wondering if the top of the AP1 hosel has a lip to accept a collared ferrule.

 

I reckon using a collared ferrule would provide a little more stability and protection to the graphite shaft at the top of the hosel.
