Any courses south of Atlanta

Just wondering if anyone had any suggestions for courses to play south of Atlanta.

I live about 20 minutes south west of Peachtree City and know about the cannongate courses

in the area but was wondering if anyone new of any hidden way gems in this area.

I have been playing a couple of courses that I use to practice(The Pines and the Cedars) on but the greens are not that good

and they are not that long. I am hoping to find something to go practice on but with a little

more length and better greens. Any suggestions would be great.

Callaway Gardens is a great place to practice, and a nice place to play if you can get a deal (rack rate is EXPENSIVE!!!)

 

They used to have a killer deal on memberships--something like $725 per year and you pay a $24 cart fee per round.

 

Check lastminutegolfer.com for other places...unfortunately, there aren't many nice options in that area--I'm from LaGrange, GA and always played at Callaway as opposed to any other places.

Besides the Canongate (I'm a Canongate member) courses, here are the ones I'd recommend:

 

Crystal Lake is probably the best course - public or private - south of Atlanta. It is every bit as nice as the Bear's Best Atlanta but without the forecaddie service. Fantastic layout and condition and if you play it from the tips it will give you everything you want. I think #4-#6 is the toughest three-hole stretch in the Atlanta area. I'm not a short hitter and I've hit 3W into #5 if it's playing into the wind. Only downside to Crystal Lake is it's WAY down there in Hampton.

 

Durham Lakes is in Fairburn just a couple miles west of I-85 south and is also a great layout. Very difficult par 3s and some great short par 4 risk/reward holes on the back nine. Occasional pace of play issues here, but get out during the week or early on weekends and you should be fine.

 

Arbor Springs in Newnan is also a couple miles west of I-85 south is a good layout. They had some financial issues a few years ago but new ownership has put a lot of money into the course and they have a new clubhouse that is really nice. The course provides a nice mix of some open holes along with some really tight (read: DEEP woods on both sides of the fairway) driving holes. They are still working on some improvements down there and the course gets better every time I've played it.

 

Wolf Creek is also a pretty good option that is very close to the airport but I think the above three courses are significantly better.

Orchard Hills in Newnan. Greens are alwways in great shape.

I'll second Orchard Hills and Arbor Springs. Two really different layouts, with Arbor Springs tight and Orchard Hills being more of open, links style. If you venture down alittle further south, The Overlook in LaGrange is a nice combination of the two styles in my opinion and accomodating staff, too.

+ 2 on Crystal and Durham lakes as well. If you are a cannongate member I would also suggest GA national, I used to play it before it was bought.

I'm going to try Orchard Hills. I work minutes away from it, and haven't tried it yet. Cheap fees for the most part.

 

St. Andrews in Douglasville area, on the south side of town is nice. Not crowded, rarely a pace of play issue, good greens and fairways for the most part.

 

Cheap too, and the back nine is much much newer, and much nicer!
