Possibly changing wedges... looking for recommendations.

I prefer the tour style wedges and have been playing the Callaway Jaws Raw for the last couple years.

 

I may have made a little mistake when ordering these "custom".  I went with a graphite 80 gram shaft.  I have an SM9 that I must have ordered a couple years ago and didn't find it to my liking.  It's got their standard steel shaft and recently I started practicing with it and find that it works better than the Callaway shaft with the graphite shaft.  I think the added weight of the SM9 makes it a little easier to hit the distance mark that I'm looking for and also easier to hit from the rough.

 

Just wondering what has worked for other golfers who have switched from graphite to steel in the wedges and/or from the Callaway Jaws to something else.

Physically, weight is your friend when pitching and chipping. You’re effectively trying to differentiate a 10% swing from a 14% one (or similar). On this type of shot, as long as your attack angle is appropriate for the wedge’s loft, the wedge head itself is close to irrelevant. It’s the shaft, weight, and weight distribution that matters.

 

That said, players using light weight graphite in their irons and “standard” DG shafts in their wedges face the challenge of effectively switching between two different club sets over and over during a round.

 

IMO the solution is to apply the same rule to your wedges that is used when changing the weight of your iron shaft - 15 grams maximum. There are a good number of 115gram wedge shafts, and they play very well indeed. That limits your irons to 95-100 gram models, which again IMO is as light as anyone need go. Going lighter to achieve higher swing speed is something a fitter may value, but a customer should not.

So I guess I should stay where I'm at.  My irons are 60 grams graphite shafts.  I'm a senior golfer.  My wedges are 80 grams graphite shafts.  Just got back from the short game course and my Callaway's did really well.  Felt good and very consistent.

If you look at the WITB’s of leading LPGA players (Korda for example) they seem to be generally following this approach. 
 

At this point, my swing speeds and distances more mimic theirs, which is ok, as is using their learning as a basis for my own configuration.

Could you ask for something like a TT Elevate steel, or DG95/105 in regular? A bit more weight but still easy to load.

Recoil 95 is not nearly as light and insubstantial feeling (to me) as some of the typical “older golfer” graphites in the 60-70 gram range. But they don’t have that heavy, stiff big-boy feel like the Steelfibers or similar premium-priced steel alternatives.

I’m a big fan of the mizuno t24 wedges. They come standard with DG TI S400. Heavier shaft with a ton of feel. They’re also soft, played vokeys since I started golf (5-6 years ago) and prefer the feel of these over vokeys, though I’m sensitive to that. I also prefer the feel of the S400 to the vokey shaft, can’t quote put my finger on exactly what it is though. Who knows, maybe it’s just the feel of the head that’s influencing that. 
 

It’s going to sound crazy but I swear the denim (copper) finish is softer than the regular satin finish. Satin finish is closer feel wise to the vokeys.

looking to switch things up give the mizuno’s a test, they may work for you!

I play Jaws for years, but don’t like raw wedges, so replaced with SM9 (first Vokeys ever), and there is no looking back.

What was your reason for not liking the Jaws Raw wedges... I think the shape is the same... it's just the "raw" portion that is different.  I've had mine since last year and have yet to see any rusting.  To be honest, I don't like the idea of "rusting".  I prefer my clubs to look as pristine as possible.  Might have to check into the Titleist wedges.

I hate rust, like my stuff looking clean. Went F grind in 52, S in 56, pretty similar to jaws S.

I think Vokey is the answer, especially if you like the heavier feeling head. I think the Callaways felt a little light.
 

Not sure on the shafts. I use the regular Wedgeflex that comes with the Vokeys and play a lighter steel shaft in my irons without issue.
