Any advice for a first time regripper?

I ordered a Lamkin Crossline Sof Cord grip kit. I should be getting it today or tomorrow. I've never took off a grip or put one on before. I don't have access to a vice. I'm gonna watch some youtube videos before I start it. Any warnings or advice that I should know before hand? I'm pretty excited!

it is so easy. I love doing my own grips, and find it therapeutic. Just grab your self a hooked blade for an exacto type razor, and slice the grip carefully. I find this to be the most dangerous part. The regular blade can be used to skim off the left over tape, and then some goo gone, or just mineral spirits to clean the tape residue off the shaft.

 

I spiral my tape as i find that easier to remove when im done, and dont forget to lube the inside of the grip before you go to put it on.

Common sense but when you remove the grips make sure to use the hook blade and go away from the body no sense in cutting yourself wideopen.

^^ Agreed. You don't even really need a vice to do it. It makes it a little easier, but it can be done without. I'll echo the sentiment to make sure you lube the inside of the grip before putting it on. It'll make it possible to align it just right after slipping it on.

I always use put a tee in the end of the grip then pour the solvent into the grip swish it around then pour the solvent onto the tape on the shaft. For getting the grip on the shaft I usually use my thumb and two fingers to make the grip like an oval shape to slide on the bottom of the shaft then the top, easier then trying to do it all at once. thanks for the replies guys, im also putting a pingman blackout on my new karsten anser2, i was a little concerned about aligning it properly, is it difficult to align a putter grip, along with how much i like the lamkins, i also got them because i wouldnt have to worry about alignment(just gonna put the lamkin logo face down), i was thinking id put the karsten putter head between my feet to keep it straight and just throw the badboy on the straightest i can

when you do the putter just make sure to use plenty of solvent so you can make adjustments to the grip before it sets in place

Honestly, I swore after regripping my betty that I would never attempt to regrip a putter again. I worked and worked and worked to get it straight, and lined up perfectly.......but i just couldnt, and then my adjustments made the grip go one way at the top, and one way at the bottom, and i never could get it to look, or feel right. I finally took it to my local shop, and they popped the grip, replaced it plumb, called me a dumbass, and i was happy.

 

As much as i enjoy doing my clubs, i leave the putters to the pros. just my feeling on it....ymmv

when replacing putter grips, before i remove the old grip, i use some masking tape to mark up where the flat part of the grip should line up. i use a little more solvent than usual and just eyeball it the best i can.

What do you mean "grip installer tool"? Something like they used to have for the Taylor Made bubble shafts?

got my kit today, putter is done and wedge and nine are done, so far its been a sinch, i took your advice and used a lot of solvent, that has made alignment easy, ill post when im done

Lots of good advice.

 

Don't waste money on grip solvent from Golfsmith or anywhere else. But do spend a few cents more and buy odorless mineral spirits. I put the mineral spirits in a spray bottle. I put wide grip tape on the shaft, stick a tee in the hole in the butt of the grip, spray several times into the grip, spray liberally on the grip tape, then dump the mineral spirits from inside the grip onto the grip tape. THEN TAKE THE TEE OUT OF THE GRIP! If you don't have the hole in the grip you'd never get the thing on.

 

There are devices out there to save the mineral spirits, but since I do the work in my workshop I just let it fall on the floor. It's cheap. Besides, I go back to the days when we put grips on with rubber cement. That's when gripping really made a mess.
