Sky Caddie SG5 and Windows Vista

If you are looking to buy a Sky Caddie and you have an operation system that is over 32 bits you are SOL. I just got a new computer and was trying to download my Sky Caddie to it and was having trouble getting it to read that it was connected to my computer to I called Sky Caddie and they said I am SOL because my new computer has Windows Vista on it and it has a 64 bit operating system. They gave me the BS answer that their tech guys were working on getting new software for Vista but did not have an ETA on when that would be out. I then asked if I could get a refund of my $400+ dollars since I could no longer take it back to the store and they told me to go sell it on EBAY or Craigslist. Such BS and man I am pissed.

Why are you pissed? They clearly state Vista (32 Bit Only) as being compatible. Why can't you take it back to the store? Sounds like you should be pissed at yourself for not doing your due diligence.

I bought it when i had my old computer that was XP and did not think about it when i purchased my new one. I can't take it back to the store b/c i have already had it for about a month and have used it. Looks like i am going to have to dig out my old computer and set it up so i am able to use this while they are working on the new software.

So, not a Vista guy but have you tried to run the 32 bit software on the 64 bit OS? If I recollect correctly most of the 32 bit OS versions could run the prior 16 bit software albeit slower than if they'd been compiled to run 32 bit.

 

It may just be the software developer engaging in CYA in that they didn't verify that the software would run 64 bit.

I'll second that. Vista 64 bit can run 32 bit apps. I think there is also an option to install Vista as a 32 bit OS, might be worth looking into.

I don't think it is a software issue as much as a driver issue between 32 and 64 bit and the SkyCaddie.

That sucks! There is no particular advantage to 64-bit Vista other than the ability to see and use more than just over 3G of memory. Any chance to "downgrade" to the x86 (32bit) version?

do as was said above. You can install vista as a 32 bit system. Problem solved.

I've got Vista Premium 32 bit os on a fairly new dual core pentium pc and have had no problem with my skycaddie sg3 course downloads. I previously successfully used an xp operating system also on the sg3.

 

The skycaddie website is not the most user friendly thing I've seen but I have yet to fail to get a course download when needed.

 

This isn't a computer forum, but what Vista versions are 64 bit?

Windows XP and Windows Vista can both be installed in either 32 or 64bit. 64bit is notorious for not having compatibility, regardless of whether it is XP or Vista. Although XP 64bit is for the most part compatible with everything but combining Vista's now relatively new release and 64bit and you get companies like SkyCaddie that aren't up-to-date on drivers that very few users need.

 

I have not run 64bit but from my understanding it provides little benefit unless it is being used for a workstation utilizing 64bit CAD or similiar programs. If your a home user, 32bit is the best option.

I did not know that the 64 bit would be such an issue when i bought my new computer. I guess i need to get my start up disk and reboot my computer using the 32 bit option and then redownload all of my programs.

There is a solution to get the Skycaddie to work with Vista 64.

 

Download and install the CP2102 drivers from SILABS. It can be found HERE!

 

Install them. it will ask you to remove the current drivers (this is if you have installed the Skycaddie software.)

 

Once installed you can now launch the SkyCaddie Desktop. When prompted, plug-in your SC. If it asks where the drivers are located, the default install location is "C:\Program Files (x86)\Silabs\MCU\CP210x"

 

You should now be able to transfer your courses over!

I tried this but it didn't seem to work for me under Vista 64.

 

- Installed sky caddie software (couldn't find device of course)

- quit sky caddie

- installed CP210 software - followed all the prompts

- plugged in sky caddie - windows says 'looking for driver for sky caddie' but it can't find anything. Told it to browse to the CP210 directory (tried all of them in that tree) but it still said it can't find the driver.

 

Has anyone gotten this to work?

Is this only a problem with the SG5? I don't have any issues with my SG4 working with Vista.

I don't believe it has anything to do w/ the sky caddie version - it's 64 bit vista (32 bit vista is fine).

I have Windows Vista 64 bit on my PC and Vista 32 bit on my laptop, and i can attest that the Skycaddy software will not work on the 64 bit version of Vista, but worked fine on my laptop with the 32 bit version.

Superb, thanks mate. Playing tomorrow, old XP system on rubbish tip and then found new i7 vista64 PC wouldnt allow connection. If it is this easy to apply a driver, why have shycaddie not updated their own software? Where did you get this from? I had spent ages trying to get it to work, another google search suddenly brought up this thread.

I just figured out which chipset they were using and searched the manufactures site for drivers!
