An eagle that meant more than an ace

I have a hole in one. I loved it, I will always remember it. But yesterday I made an eagle on a tricky par 5, with three shots that were worthy of an eagle.

 

The ace was in a casual round with strangers, not a long par 3, but more than a wedge.

This eagle was on the final hole of a league double best-ball tournament, ending a round that was a grind from start to finish. Long drive over trees to a blind landing area. Hybrid 225 into the green blocked by trees and a creek in front, traps left and right, to about 10 feet. Straight putt slightly downhill, dead center.

 

The person standing on the green when I rolled the second shot on (oops) said I almost rolled in the second shot. I hit it thinking I'd come up on the front apron.

 

It just feels like three shots to eagle, at least in this case, was tougher than a good eight iron to a mostly flat green that hopped left and went in. I've made a few eagles, but this one was hardest to make by far.

 

anyone ever feel that way about an eagle, double eagle, or maybe a round below par?

For sure. I've hit a thousand shots better than the one I made for my ace.

Give me an ace. I've had plenty of eagles and flushed shots. Worthless.

 

Five guys have made holes-in-one while playing in my group. I can picture every one. Two of them were pathetic, a skull and a grounder that magically found their destination.

 

I'd trade in a flash.

I havent had a HIO yet but I have eagled a par four. Drived to the top of a hill and then a wedge into the hole.

I have had a HIO (with a good shot, not a duffed one that ricocheted off something). I have eagled a par four once and eagled par 5's in several different ways - putts, chips and a wedge from 100 yards.

 

I would rather a HIO if I was to have anything else again.

 

However, what I have not had is a double eagle, or albatross. That would be truly amazing an bette rthan an eagle or a HIO, in my opinion because typically, it would be from a lot further out that most HIOs would be.

 

Either way, it is all about getting a good score so however the under par scores happen, then they are all great.

I've had many eagles so I'd take an ace just to say I made an ace in my lifetime.

 

But there's this one hole at our course that's 580 yards long, straight away par 5. It plays into the wind so it plays longer than the score-card says. There is a large pond about 20 yards short of the green that must be played over in order to get to the green.

 

I never in my wildest dreams imagined that I would ever eagle that hole unless I holed out my 3rd. But this year on a fairly calm day I blasted a drive leaving me 260 away from the center of the green where the pin was. I took a 3 wood and just hammered it right at the stick and was 20 feet short of the pin on the green. At this point my playing partners are going nuts because in the 9 years they've been members they've never seen anyone reach this green in two. Meanwhile I'm trying to read a tricky putt that will probably be one of my few chances at eagle on the hole in my lifetime. I didn't have any clue what the putt was doing because I was so amped up, so I just decided to take it straight at the hole with force (I was not going to leave it short). Sure enough it tracks right to the center of the cup, hits the back of the hole and drops in. I hit 3 solid shots on that hole that day and I feel I deserved eagle because of it. Its probably the most talked about 3 shots at our course this year because my playing partners were telling everyone about it.

Yea, that's what I'm talking about.

 

Every time you step up to a par 3, that's driveable, you have a chance to make a HIO. But eagle putts are more rare than that. And on that hole you talked about, way more rare.

 

Having a HOI probably blurs my judgement...you are right, I would not trade it because it's more rare than eagles.

 

But eagles have their place too, I've learned.

I think an ace would always mean more than an eagle, but considering I still haven't had one, I couldn't tell you guys. I had three eagles on one nine in a tournament though, i'd say those were pretty special. Ended up shooting 7 under on that nine with a bogey.
