Iron shafts....indecision is a hell of a thing!

So here are the stats....no idea on swingspeed, however...

So, what shaft should be in my irons. I tend to hit the ball a bit higher than average, and am currently gaming s-400, but think they might be just a bit too weak. Thinking about Rifle Project X6.0 or 6.5, or just rifle 6.5 FCM's. What do you guys think??

I think the Project X 6.0 is pretty close to the s400 as far as stiffness. If your s400's seem weak then I would probably go with the Project X 6.5 . I've had great results changing from s300's to PX 7.0s. Thats just my two cents.

I have similar numbers and just switched from S300's to X100's. They brought the ball flight down a tad but not anything major. Supposedly the PX shafts will produce a lower flatter trajectory than the DG's. The only problem with the PX shafts is that there are a lot of people who got a stiffer shaft than they could play and really hated them. It's an expensive experience to get the wrong iron shafts and have to replace them...

dOn is right. It is a costly gamble to invest in PX's if there is a slight chance that they may not be right for you. I had originally looked at DG X100s when I updated from stock uniflex, but the wife told me to get whatever I wanted! I dont hear that often enough so I rolled the dice and got lucky... I had a DG x100 in a 2iron I purchased on a certain online auction site... I loved the way it felt fit my swing well.

The absolute truth is that you or no one else on here can tell what shafts you need given only that much information. There is so much more that comes into play when deciding on irons. Get fitted! Don't take it to Roger Dunn's or any generic chain golf shop like that. There are people out there called "Master Clubfitters" out there who charge no more, if not less than one of those places. All Roger Dunn (or most other golf shops) will do is put you up to a launch monitor and tell you how fast your clubhead and ballspeed are and giving you a recommendation based on those stats alone. What you want is for someone to take into account WHEN YOU ARE RELEASING THE CLUB, not just how fast you're swinging it. For example, there are people out there (like a good buddy of mine) whose swing speeds (with a fast tempo btw) are 120mph and use a SENIOR FLEX! Choosing the right shaft flex mostly has to do with where your hands are at impact, not swing speed. Go to KZGolf.com and look up their dealers and where there is one in your area, most of them are Master Clubfitters and will be capable of fitting you properly.

 

You say you already have a higher than average ball flight. Well, Rifle Project Xs are high kick point (high kp= low ball flight and visa versa), but your True Tempers are too. So basically, there is no need to switch to Rifle.

You really went from DG S300s to Project X 7.0s? That's insane. That's 3 flexs stiffer! How did you know that you needed 7.0s? What did the fitter base his decision for your flex on?

No Fitter. Basiclly, a guess. We don't have access to launch monitors or any of the high tech equipment so we base most of our changes on what our more seasoned playing partners suggest. They watch us closely and give us advice on equipment and technique. They haven't steered us wrong yet. Like I said, It was a gamble but I got lucky. Evidently, I have an insain swing speed. They have completely transformed my game.

If you have access to a Golfsmith or Golf Galexy go and see what type of steel shafts they have and hit them. IMO, it really doesn't matter what club head they are in cuz you are just interested in getting the correct shaft flex/feel. PX's are approximately a half flex stiffer than rifles, i.e. 5.0 PX equals 5.5 rifle. TT Black Golds are good shaft, persnickiddy, but very good shafts.
