Mizuno mX -200 - Top Rail Grind

To look like top line of MP 52
Hi all

I trust the opinions on this board so here goes.

Today I purchased a set of Mizuno Mx 200 with Project X 5.0 (soft stepped once) at 1 degree upright. I asked the fitter (very renowned in the area) if he could do a top rail grind on this club to have it look similar to the MP 52 w/out changing it's characteristics. He said no problem.

Question for this board - Do you agree with that statement and if so, why don't the manufacturer's just do this initially as that is the main complaint for game improvement clubs. (thick topline).

Thanks in advance!!!!!

Game improvement clubs are generally top line thick and sole wide and huge offset because that is what the majority of GI seekers seek!

If you are looking for GI clubs with thin topline, you are looking for a very rare bird indeed.

i disagree, i think more people complain about the offset, but thats just my opinion, i also think that a thicker topline in most cases will provide more confidence to the user, that's probably why the more "game-improvement" an iron gets, the thicker the topline gets

you put 2 questions in your post... does anyone agree with the grind not changing characteristics and why does the manufacturer add a thicker topline.

It will change the characteristics but by how much...unknown. it'll lower the cg of the club, change the headweight, change the swingweight. Not all of this will be bad necessarilly but it will be a change. and some of it might have little to no effect on teh ballflight or club feel, but no guarantee. I suggest you buy an extra club have it ground and see before you go all out on the set.

Is he going to weigh each clubhead and make sure he's removing the same amount od material?

the why has been stated by others. thin toplines scare high handicappers, big chunks of metal give them confidence that they can hit the ball.

Oh yeah and like already stated you'll need to refinish if you play in humid areas or get real used to polishing your clubs often.

People that buy GI irons need them, they need the top line for confidence thats why it is there. It is also to help with extreme perimeter weighting. to say that most people with GI irons dont like the top line is just wrong. if you want an iron with a thin top line then you need to be able to hit it. i'm sorry you cant have a nike slingshot look like a forged blade. sounds like you are trying to have your cake and eat it too, i say leave them alone, because if you do go to re-sell no one will buy them and no shops will take them on trade. just leave them alone.

I stand corrected.

Thank you all for your posts. I play to a nine handicap and I guess I am in the majority who lokes to look at a thin top line while being afforded the forgiveness of perimter weighting.

I am still going to have the top rail grinded. I will let you know how it works out. It will be a couple of weeks.

In the meantime, if anybody else has has any input on this, please feel free to respond, and be candid.

Thanks

I have always wanted a forgiving club with low offset, thin topline, with a mid/boring ball flight. After many years of trying to find this I just stuck with my TM 300. The only other set I wish I had was my old set of MP32. Neither of which are extremely forgiving but at least I do not have to call NASA to get permission to hit a shot.

I do think by thinning the topline you are going to change the swingweight and potentially raise your ballflight due to the weight being lower. You might be able to counter this by placing lead tape in the top of the cavity but you might want to weigh all the clubs first so you know exactly how much you are going to lose.
