Iron yardage gaps

Is 15 yards to much?

I figure it is easier to hit a 1/2 or 3/4 wedge then a 1/2 or 3/4 3 wood, right? So I was thinking of changing my setup from the the first column to the second with the 15 yard gaps. What do you think to many in between shots, less options around the green but yet more options into par5s and long par 3s. I usually play from the tips and if the wind is in on you on some of these Par 3s I need that extra 2 hybrid vs. a gap wedge.

when looking at the golf magazine that does a "what's in the bag" I find that a lot of players have 15 yard gaps. Personally I generally play 4 wedges, so there's my answer. I prefer to have the opportunity to convert from 150 in then roll the dice from downtown.

One thought to consider - use different set ups depending on conditions. I play a few courses on a regular basis and will mix it up depending on the course or the weather.

You hit your irons quite a bit further than most folks so your gaps are naturally bigger than someone with more normal distances. You only have so may clubs to cover a relatively long distance. In this case 12 clubs for 175 yards. That comes out to right at 15 yards/club.

 

I do notice that your lofts are pretty strong. Your four iron has the same loft as my three iron. I think you can shrink your gaps if you go to weaker lofts, but that's at the cost of some distance relative to the number on the bottom of the club.
