Help...concerns about reshafting Hot Melt head

Burner TP
Hi,

I recently picked up a Burner TP '07 driver head with hot melt. I picked out a shaft and I'd like to have the club assembled. Unfortunately, I don't have the proper tools, otherwise I'd save myself a few bucks and do it myself.

Here is my concern. I've had club work done at the local shop before. Most of the time it's fine, but the only time I had my driver reshafted (FT-3), they melted the "Fusion Technology" and there was some residue on the sole and some visible "damage" where the metal meets the composite material.

Should I be concerned with bringing them the TP/Hot Melt head to have the shaft installed? If they don't do it properly, could they cause the hot melt to shift and throw the head properties off? Should I tell the guy that the head has hot melt and that he needs to be careful when assembling? I don't know too much about hot melt and whether or not this is a valid concern.

Any advice is appreciated. I live in Western Massachusetts, so if anyone can recommend a place in CT from Hartford up or in Western Mass, that would be appreciated as well.

Thanks in advance! :clapping:

It sounds very much as if the shaft in your Callaway driver was pulled using far too much heat. It's very easy to damage the composite part of the Fusion drivers and/or the bond between the face and the composite body by using the heat method. For that reason, many people routinely drill out the old shaft to preclude any possibilty of melting anything.

As above, with a heatgun and a decent shaft puller there should be no problems with the hot melt - provided a complete muppet isn't doing the work.

Edit: Just re-read your post and noticed you bought the head only :blush2: The pyromaniac at the shop has got no reason to set about it with any heat if he's shafting it.

Shouldn't be a problem assuming they take reasonable care and direct the heat towards the hosel, assuming they need to pull. If the thing is head-only then there's no heat involved at all. The fact that they screwed up an FT-3 isn't all that damning but it doesn't inspire confidence either. It's a very tough head to pull without cooking something but they should have known that.

Where in Mass are you? If you don't need it before February drop me a line. I'm away from my shop until mid-Jan but I'm based in Lenox, MA and do these all the time. Otherwise I think the guy at Fran Johnson's in West Springfield is OK. Stay away from Dick's. Best guy in the state is probably Frank Viola but he's all the way east in Saugus.

Thanks to everyone for your feedback. It is the head only and I didn't realize that no heat is involved to just install the shaft. It makes sense now that I think about it though. So you are all correct that I shouldn't have any concerns (unless I take it to a pyromaniac).

I'm in Easthampton. The guy at Fran Johnson's is actually the guy who did my FT-3. I agree also about it "not being all the damning" that they screwed up the FT-3. I guess it was partially my fault, asking them to try and save the shaft.

Thanks a lot for offering to do the install, but I will take it down to FJ's and just give him a heads up on the hot melt. And I'll throw in a "you don't heat the head to do an install, right?".

Thanks again everyone for the quick and helpful replies. This site rules.

And I'll throw in a "you don't heat the head to do an install, right?".

You don't even have to throw that in. No heat necessary.

I can pull a shaft in a regular driver in 30 seconds, but my FT-5 took me almost an hour to pull the shaft and be able to save it AND not damage the head. I have changed it twice with no problems, but I know I could destroy it, even being careful.

I would never pull a shaft on an FT3/5 without being released from liability.

As for a hotmelted club, I would use less heat, but you really don't need to worry much. No worry at all for an install.
