Is it worth adding 1/4 inch to irons

every .5" inch you add to a club (in length), I believe it changes the lie of the club by .25* flatter.... don't quote me, I don't have my ping fitting manual in front of me... lol

For example, i am 6'5... my sticks are 2* upright and plus 1"... therefore, they are actually only 1* upright..

with that said, unless you are hitting alot of shots off the toe.... try to standard length and maybe hit of a lie board before adding 1/4 of an inch...

to be fit for plus 1/4 of an inch is odd... i rarely have seen people need that little of an addition... unless they are tour calibre players...

Based on my height alone using the online fitting,I should be .25" long and 2* up. I was able to get a set that is .5" long and 2* and could not be happier with the way they fit me. Previously I would hit big fades with my old set of irons. I got a modern set of clubs that fit me well and have never hit my irons better. The only thing I am looking into now is using midsize grips. I'll be gripping a wedge soon with a midsize GP ND Multicompound and may regrip my entire set if I like the feel. If not I may regrip with regular size and a couple wraps of tape.

And to answer your question, if you feel you could use some length or are hitting fades or topping the ball, you may want that extra .25 or .5".

So you have the clubs and you're looking at the cost of either reshafting or pulling the grips, adding extensions, and regripping. That kind of sucks. Was the fitting static or dynamic? There's nothing wrong with getting one club adjusted upright without the extension to see how it feels, or even to add an extension and new grip to one club to see how you like it before sinking the money on everything.

Well you could also experiment with grips before adding extensions. I know it won't be huge, but for example Tour Velvets at 1/8" to the Raw length and New Decade Multi's add 1/4". I just had my irons built 1/4" longer but factored in the NDMC's because I wanted a little more Swingweight and already choke down a touch.

Certainly, adding length makes the effective lie angle more upright - not flatter.

In many instances adding length, and even only a quarter of an inch, will make a difference. Especially if normaly grip your club too far up on the grip, which often happens to taller players trying to play the club a little longer. For many people (including myself) the extra 1/4" (I'm to fittet to play 1/2" but play 3/4") makes sure that all of my (left) hand is supported properly through the swing.

IMO it makes no, max minimal difference. More important is the lie angle. But IME go with the length you feel it´s the best for your game.

Last year I was fitted +0.5" and the result was I chocked down. My new irons are now +.25" and I´m happy, because I can now grip correct.

But clubfitting is a funny story. I was fitted from 3 different clubfitters (incl.Mizuno) and the rec. were: 1. +0.50 2. standart 3. +0.25,

and a pretty consitant iron player.

pretty sure its the other way around there. cant speak for ping b/c im not sure about their lie angles, but with my nike clubs, adding 1/2 inch made the clubs play 1* upright.

It all depends on how you setup to the clubs once the length is added. For instance, if the club is now 1/2" longer and you stand the same distance from the ball, the club now became a flatter lie (that is the toe is on the ground). But if you stand further from the ball after the extension, the club has now become more upright (the heel is on the ground).

I wouldnt bother if you already have the clubs. If u want to make them a touch longer and you are using midsize grips, a good little trick is when you regrip them, use std grips, and put a couple of ducktape strips to fatten it. Let the tape go about an inch over the top of the club, then fold it down inside the shaft. Put the double sided tape on and do the same thing. Voila! an extra quarter inch, with no extensions.

I wouldnt put extensions on for a quarter inch, that will just mess up the swingweight. If you were to actually measured your irons, some of them would probably be a quarter inch over std, some of them might be a quarter inch under.
