Ping Shafts

TTDG v. Ping Offerings
I'm looking to order some custome pings (s57's) and am somewhat curious about the lighter-weight iron shaft offerings...i.e. ZZ65, TTDG SL and the AWT shafts. I've pretty much only ever played TTDG. Does anyone have any experience with these shafts, maybe even in comparison to TTDG? I am a slow tempo, high swing-speed player....anywhere from 110 to 115 with my driver. What Ping shaft offering would be best for me in the S57's?

P.S. The search function on WRX is not working for me today, for some reason. So, sorry if I am rehashing old posts.

I dont have much experience with the Ping stock shafts, other than the CS Lite. Which I hate.

I came from irons with DG to the i5's with stock CS Lites. Besides the fact that they spin like crazy, I never got used to the lighter weight, even after half a season. I too swing about 110-115 with a driver with an inconsistent tempo. I am going to reshaft with Rifle 6.0's here shortly.

From what I have read, the AWT is very similar to the CS Lite. The ZZ65 is between a DGSL and a DG Lite. About 115 grams that launches higher than DG.

One thing worth looking into is the KBS Tour. These get rave reviews on here and are only a $10 per club upcharge thru Ping, compared with $25-30 per shaft elsewhere.

I was fortunate enough to be invited to the Ping Tour Dept for a fitting. Swing speed is close to yours, but tempo tends to be a little faster. I got to hit the CS Lite, AWT, ZZ65, and TTDG back to back. Beautiful outdoor range BTW. The CS Lite flies the highest, and does seem to spin quite a bit. I hated them in the i5s that I had also. High, short, floaters all day. The AWT is the next highest launching, although not as bad as the CS Lite, still somewhat "spinny" for me. I think both would work well for slower swing speed players with low launch angles. The ZZ65 is an old favorite for me. Launches a bit higher than the TTDG, which was the lowest launching, but nowhere near as high as the other two. As you might expect, less spin than the other two as well. Good choice if you want a slightly lighter shaft. The TTDG was the lowest launching and seemed to be the most controlled. That was the shaft that was recommended for me. This while hitting the i10 irons, although my results with the s58 and g10 yielded much the same results, proportionally.

My swing speed is right in line with yours...and I just got a set of S57s with KBS tour shafts...absolutely perfect combo....If you want them in a lighter weight you can always get the 5.5 and hardstep them once...I believe they are 120 grams vs the 130 of the 6.5s.....

Thanks for all of the replies. Based on what you guys are saying, I need to stick with TTDG. I don't need a shaft that is going to launch any higher....I am a high ball hitter, no matter what shaft. I experimented this summer with TTDG x100 vs. s300. My hope was that I could lower my ball flight with the x100. The x100 made virtually no difference in distance or trajectory for me, but felt a little too boardy....I couldn't quite feel the clubhead as much as I like. After doing some research, I found that x100 might be a little strong for a slower swing tempo like mine.

All that being said, I was under the impression that the lighter shafts have stiffer tips, and therefore launch lower....is this incorrect?

The lighter shafts do not have stiffer tips, as a rule. DGSL being the exception though. The CS Lite and AWT have softish tips.

If you are used to DG, stick with it. There is a reason these shafts are decades old and still played by the majority of golfers. However, is your flight high due to excessive spin, or excessive launch? If it is due to spin, the KBS spin quite a bit less, so while they launch higher, your actual ball flight may remain the same with more distance. Just worth noting...
