Tough Day at the Office
I was perusing the leaderboard and saw that Mathias shot an 89, including a 50 on the back that was comprised of 2 pars, 2 bogies, 2 doubles, and 3 triples! Surprisingly, nothing higher than a 7 on the scorecard. Usually when someone blows up it's from an 8 or a 9 on the card. But in this case the wheels came off.

I will watch the prime time coverage tonight but I wonder if there was anything unusual about the playing conditions.

I saw that too. A 50 is pretty bad. Hopefully somebody knows what happened.

Just out of curiosity, is there a rule on the PGA Tour where the players have to shoot under a specific score during a round or else they face some sort of discipline? I remember something happening to Michelle Wie a year or so ago when she was playing horribly during a round due to injury, quit in the middle of her round, and there was some issue that maybe she stopped before she was over whatever # par the threshold score was, where she wouldn't be able to enter the next tournament or something like that. I don't recall the exact details.

Not that I would ever wish a horrible round on anyone, because I have been there many times... but this just shows that even pros can have bad days too. Hopefully Mathias wasn't too injured.

But at least he doesn't have to write the USGA explaining the reason for his poor performance like we do. Kidding!

Don't know what the reasons behind his score might be, but as a former golf pro at PGA National I know all to well about the Championship Course. It is brutal and the back nine is unrelenting. I front has some spots where you can attack, but you have to be on your game for the back nine. That is not including the weather. If that is acting up at all, it could be a recipe for a long, long day out there.

I would guess that since Mathias is a proven tour caliber player this is more of a hiccup on a golf course that does not allow for a bad ball striking day. If the wind was up at all....would be a tough afternoon out there. Not saying 50 tough, but very difficult.

the rule that people gave michelle about is that you are not allowed to shoot more than 18-over in one round. if i remember correcty she was on pace twice to do this and withdrew in both. i am not sure if the pga has a rule about this. (i mean no negative criticism to wie she was just the one case i remember hearing about and people were upset with the circumstances around it)

I would question if the 18 rule is in place for the PGA, I think the 18 rule in the LPGA also may only reffer to players on sponsors exemtions? I could be wrong.

The reason I question the 18 thing on the PGA is at some of the Majors it would be pretty easy to blow up and put a high number out there, how much do you think he doesn't want to go back out there today, would be tought to be motivated to grind out another tough round when he has no chance to make the cut.

This rule only applied to those playing in tournaments that did not have a tour card.
