How many yards is the differ from range balls to quality balls.

Hey guys. I am new to golf ( within a month) and i have been playing as much as possible focusing on mechanics and what not. I have been curious for awhile about the difference in range ball distance compared to titleist pro v1 and other quality balls. Yes this is a dumb question but i have been wondering for awhile.

 

I consistently average 270 carry at the range with my burner. I was wondering an approxamation on the yardage i can expect to gain with high quality balls.

 

Also i thought i would throw in why i picked up golf. I have always liked golf and want to play and I recently had rotator cuff surgery and labrum surgery so i am still recoviring but my orthopedic said golf should be fine.

some range balls fly about the same as real balls, others are designed to fly a bit shorter

 

you may not be able to hit a pro v any farther than the range balls or you may hit it 10 yards farther, heck you may even end up hitting pro V's shorter than range balls

Yeah i did some research outside of this website and i think your dead on.. Too many variables.

 

I am still afraid to buy some decent balls then shank them.

As a beginner you wont notice much differnce. In fact buying a high dollar Prov1 etc. is a waste of money for most unless you understand you to use them in the short game. Buying some less expensive balls such as Top Flites, Noodles, Pinnacles, or even mid range balls such as an NXT will be just fine, you will hit them all about the same distance. The real performance difference is added spin around the green. If you learn how to hit a low spinner that hops and checks next to the pin then you need a urethane covered ball, for everyone else you really dont need to spend the extra $$.

I have been a member at the same range for a number of years now and we use one of the Srixon range balls. I can only speak for the Srixon range balls, but I've found that they are about the same from 8 iron thru my wedges, but anything longer than 8 iron they seem to fall a bit short. The biggest decline in yardage is seen with driver and my fairway metals. I've been on the course with a few of them to see how much of a difference there really was and the Srixon range ball was 25-30 yards behind ProV1 off the tee.

+1 on the variables but an example from 99% of the ranges over here might give you one end of the scale.

 

6 iron with the truly horrible solid crud balls carries about 155 vs real ball 180. Driver carries about 220 vs real ball 265 or so.

 

Some of the saltier dudes who hit real balls further than me can't get much more out of the range shingle. Nasty.
