Wow, what a ball.

I decided to take one of these out today for a practice round on the course and see what I could do. This is the best ball I've ever seen.

Started out on a long dog-legging par 5 with water in between. Hit 3-iron as far (almost too far) as I'd hit, right up to the water off the tee (about 270 yards). Hit 3-iron about 260 yards, leaving me about 40 yards into a big green with the hole in the center. I decided to really see what the ball could do as it was a practice round, and hit a low punch with lots of spin. it took one hop and stopped.

Second hole was another dog-leg. Tried to cut the corner too tightly and drilled a tree with the drive. I then hit a nice fade around the dogleg to about 100. I put the shot from here over the green into the bunker, which brings me to a point I want to make. I am a very fast swinger. I don't have a swing speed #, but I routinely hit drives 340+. It may be because of that fact, but this was the longest premium ball I've used. For this round, almost all of my distances were off by 10 yards.

At the end of the session, I hit a few trees, crushed some drives, and played almost 9, and the ball looks brandish new. Wow.

The only possible complaint may be with the feel off the putter, but I can't tell yet. I'm still working on the putting and it's hard to say, but it didn't feel as soft as some other balls off the putter. That aside, everything else was way better. Loved it.

I'd like a review also. I am playing a scramble this friday and was going to hit the Z-Star. I really like the feel of this ball off the putter and with my 60 degree wedge I can get a good amount of rollback. I wanted to try the x, but am so hapy with the performace of the Z-Star that I would hate to lose a great deal of spin and feel around the green for the sake of distance off the tee...

...then again, my Powerbilt AFO is coming this week and maybe it will make needing the distance from the x model redundant.

I played both this weekend. I've been playing the regular Z-Star for a couple weeks and put a Z-Star X in play for a couple holes on Sunday. Between the two, I prefer the Z-Star. It's a great all around ball that provides good distance (not the longest), Pretty good stopping power but not too much (my ball was usually within 3-4 inches of the ballmark but I had one zip back about 4 feet sideways), pretty low backspin off the driver, Mid Launch, Soft off the putter but still feels good off the driver. I thought the X version had a more clicky feel and for me was shorter. The X definitely spun more.

Both are pretty good balls but I prefer the regular Z-Star.

I'm still not sure I like these better than the Tour ix or Prov1x (both of those are definitely longer off the tee and with irons but don't feel as good).

Next round out, I'm going to do a side-by-side comparison with the Z-Star and Tour ix.

The previous ball I'd played regularly was the TaylorMade TP Red (new one). It's a very good ball but I felt like I got more out of the Z-Star X

I've heard lots of people say the Z-Star X spins more and goes shorter than the regular Z-Star. I have a feeling that these people aren't tremendously fast swingers and therefor aren't compressing the ball. The X version, for me, is amongst the longest balls I've played. And I get lots of greenside spin.

The TP Red is a softer feeling on putts, but all things considered i prefer the play of the X from the tee.

jones, would you say the regular z star performed more like the v1x for you? and which x, 09 or 07?

Znile, what is your driver and 6 iron ss if you have that info?

Thanks

Actually I felt it played in between the Prov1 and Prov1x 2009 Versions. For me, this is perfect. I got more distance off the driver with the Z-star versus the Prov1 and less compared to the Prov1x. I got less spin off the driver versus the Prov1 but more spin than the Prov1x. Around the greens I got less spin than either the Prov1 or Prov1x which for me is good, Off the irons, it played identical to the Prov1. Off the putter it felt like a soft Prov1.

I think I'm more interested in the fact that your 3i distance is my driver.

Pretty good review. Have you hit the regular Z-Star? I love that ball but I get really punished with sidespin if I don't hit it well enough. The Tour IX is perfect in that regard but if the greens are hard, I can't make it bite enough. I now am trying to compare the Tour I (great so far), and the Z-Star X, trying to find that high spin ball that doesn't fly right into the poison-ivy packed tree line at my course laughing at me all the way there.

BaNey: I don't have my actual swing speed numbers. However, I can give you distance info if that helps.

sshadow: I haven't used the regular Z-star. I've used both Pro-V1 and Pro-V1x, as well as Callaway Tour i and Tour ix and I always have greatly, far and beyond, preferred the x version. Because of that, I never have really messed with the "softer compression" balls.

Because of that, I'm very intrigued by the Bridgestone Tour balls and am looking to get my hands on some. Especially because the black (not the S or RX) is designed for especially fast swingers. Any really long hitters on here that have used both that and the Z-Star X, please give a comparison if you would.
