Rockfish, you've played the TP Red for 3 or 4 seasons, but have you played the TP Red LDP?

Sorry if I wasn't clear but I've always played the "current" ball. I believe the LDP Red came out for 2008 and I was playing that ball last year and the beginning of this (until I found out it was non-conforming). Before that I was playing the then current TP Red.

Like all subjects bantered about on discussion boards, what's touted here as a "has to be" has nothing to do with amateur golfers for the most part. If you're to lazy to ask tournament officials and your a worry wort, play some other ball till the new balls are available.

I've asked if TP Red are ok and been told, they are fine. I think people make a big deal out of nothing when it comes to what amateur's use and where. The key is if you're in a tournament - ask.

The NEW conforming balls have a label stating such on each box. I haven't seen any myself.

I wonder if the officials at those tournaments even knew the TP Red was non-conforming. I mean, I'm a pretty avid golfer, know the rules as well as most, come here on golfwrx from time to time and *I* didn't know the ball was non-conforming. I saw "Tournament Edition balls on eBay and began doing some research. That's how I originally found out.

I asked a guy on eBay who was selling Tournament Edition balls if his balls had the "/" or not. He said they DID (meaning they were non-conforming). Maybe he misunderstood the question ???

Anyway TM has given me 2 dozen of the NEW balls for my old ones but I still haven't sen any new ones in any of the stores near me (NY Golf, Golf Galaxy, Golfsmith).

They might not, but I am inclined to think if not they should and address such issues before play. All we can do is ask and use our own judgment. I know that they are usable for handicap, in any $$ game, the club tournaments I frequent, including interclub team play, unless otherwise stipulated.

They are not usable if I am playing in a regional amateur event that's governed by USGA rules. I wouldn't use it in say the "One Man Scramble" or any other nationally recognized events. Pretty simple if you ask me.

How did you manage to get TM to trade out boxes?

i haven't played the red, but the black is slightly firmer than the burner TP to me

The black is harder than Red. The black is like Pro V1 spin, think Nike One Black with more spin better feel. The Red nto quite as grabby, but smooth feeling and less driver spin, flatter flight....that's why I like the Red. Putts well.

At that price, those and Cally Tours for 18/$39 (less than 2.50 a ball) are best deals in long time.

The E5+ isn't bad. Either is going to feel as soft or softer and spin way more around greens, maybe less off dirver than e6. I love Bridgestone, worked for them 10 years, until recent version, B330s was my favorite ball, stocked up but still ran out eventually.
TP BLACK LDP is for players who need help adding spin to their shots to hold the green more. The TP BLACK LDP also keeps the ball in the air longer for slower swing speed players to get some extra distance.
This is where I guess I am always confused. If you look at the golf digest 2009 chart, the x balls or balls that people say need a higher swing speed to compress, are the ones that go higher. The pro v1 is lower than the 1x, the one tour is lower than the one tour d, the 330s is lower than the 330. The only 2 that seem to be reversed are the srixons and the taylor mades. So what is really correct here? If you look at Srixons site, they say that the Z Star (lower swing speed) is like the TM Red / Pro v1 / b330s and the Z StarX (higher swing speed) is like the TM Black / Pro v1x / b330.

WHAT IS RIGHT????????????????????????????????????

There isn't a swing speed minimum for TM Blacks. If you look at the golf digest article, I think the swing speed they are usuing is 96mph. Even last year's February 2008 Golf Magazine article, they use a swing speed of 90mph and the TP Black flew further than the TP Reds by a small margin. I think the only ball out now that has a swing speed requirement is the Bridgestone B330 series. With the other balls, it's what you want in terms of feel.

Clicky and more spin go with the x or black version.
Softer with marginally less spin go with the regular or reds.

That's what I've read and experienced.
