Upro.....did I make a mistake

Recommended Posts

I purchased a Callaway Upro last week and used it this weekend. I played two courses, one of which is holding a major this year (PGA) in Minnesota. I was incredibly disappointed to find bunkers etc. that were not mapped onto the Upro. To me, the device was not simple to use and easy to read. Should I have gotten an Sky Caddie SG5? Does anyone have advice? Will they take the Upro back? I was simply disappointed in the device. I have been using a range finder for the past two years and wanted more course information and front/back green info. Any thoughts?

Remember that a course getting ready to host any PGA event might have some bunkers and such moved around. No device can be that up to date.

I have found mine so easy to use and simple to read. I don't think the Sky Caddie is any easier.

I would suggest using it a few more times and going over the features again to make sure it is set-up the way you want it to be. There are a number of things that you can change to make it easier to use. Auto hole advance, skip fly overs, use basic numbers instead of pictures, brightness, etc.

Yes, I agree, the uPro is one of the most simple devices out there. Especially more so in comparison to the SkyCaddie. If you are tech savvy, everything is simple but I would suggest to go over the videos again to help you learn how to use the features.

On the other hand, I have not seen a course yet that had missing bunkers in all purchases I had in Pro Mode. Although the hole in the green changes everytime I go out! Wierd.

hahaha...

The uPro map of my home course is outdated due to changes to the course this spring (fairways enlarged/moved - 1 added bunker). I contacted uPro about it, but they don't have newer arial photos so I have to live with the inaccuracies for a while :(.

FYI, Skycaddie has already re-mapped Hazeltine with all the new updates and changes. I talked to skygolf customer service and they said Hazeltine called them last fall and told them they would be making changes. They re-mapped it this spring and works great! I've been a Big Skycaddie guy, and this is one of the biggest reasons. All other hand held GPS in the market wouldn't know of the changes, because they use satellite images and most are way out dated map's. SkyGolf is #1 for a reason, there Map's. The best in the business....

No GPS can guarantee 100% updated maps - that would be cost-prohibitive to any company. I laud SKG for catching your update, but they have been known also to have older information and take some time to get it updated too.

My expectation (or hope) is that they will try to do updates of their entire database every 2-3 years. Yes, it'd be great to have every change a course makes, but I've come to accept that I don't get every new road or address on my car GPS every year so thinking golf GPS would be different doesn't seem too off-based. If anything, I think that would be even more incentive for companies to allow users to self-map and then upload new info (like Golf Guru but even better). I hope the sat-image based mapping companies use that strategy to their advantage - if the new obstacle's available, then they should be able to map it fairly quickly and easily.

That said, when I know there's been changes, I just plan around it. A new bunker or something can change the way a hole plays, but most courses don't make so many changes that they completely abandon all features of the previous layout so I can wait.

No GPS can necessarily be 100% accurate all the time, but when you have a company like skycaddie that is sooo strong, courses will certainly be more inclined to be sure they are up to date than the smaller ones.

I agree with you, I don't see all the "hype" in the uPro. I think the sg5 is easier to use, I think the larger size is a significant benefit, they are adding green slops and working on adding overhead views of the holes and the menu system is more straightforward than the uPro.

The only people we have sold uPros to have been the few that have come asking for it, and of the 4 - 5 this year, 3 of them have brought it back and gotten the SG5. We hear the same thing from the Golf Headquarters stores nationwide... I'll let real world sales speak over a review anyday!

I'm glad to know my purchase and happiness with the uPro isn't real world. :black eye:

It obviously can't be, since I find the uPro exceedingly easy to use and quite accurate, not to mention that I prefer its size over that of the SG5 which I find to large.

Taking my tongue out of my cheek, everyone has their own preferences - I and many others happen to prefer the uPro, just as some will prefer the SG5.

I have had nothing but a great experience using my uPro. Every course I have played has been spot on with the sole exception being one bunker which was on the uPro but the course had removed the sand due to drainage issues at the start of the season. (which was easy to pick up on by the way due to the aerial photography vs what I was seeing) Three of my rounds have been with golfers using the SG5 and we have not noticed a major difference between what I get on my yardages and what they get. (Actually one time one of the SG5s and my uPro showed one set of numbers and the other SG5 was 3 yards different).

As for ease of use, I guess everyone's mileage varies. For me, I just turn the uPro on when I get to the course and play. I'm not sure what difficulties you have had as I just don't see enough different options on the unit to create confusion, heck I really only use two buttons the entire round. All of my experiences have been in pro mode though so maybe this isn't the case using the basic mode....

The SG5 cost plus the yearly fee vs. the $249 plus $80 for 20 pro mode courses ($399 - $50 golf galaxy coupon - $100 rebate) made this an easy decision and I don't regret my purchase in the least.

I owned a skycaddie sg3 for years. The upro came out last year and I havent looked back. The upro is superior in all ways. I did run into a course that was completely off. Blackhorse/Bayonet Blackhorse course was redone and the thing was completely useless at that course. All other times I have played >100 it has been spot on. SG3 was the biggest POS, I liked my SG2 better than that.

UPRO is not update on this course because they can't.........Upro uses satellite maps that are several years old. SkyCaddie usually updates a course as soon as they are allowed on the course to do the mapping.

well thats just straight up wrong. i really don't understand why SG5 users are so much more stuck up than everyone else...

the upro does constantly update their GPS, but there will of course be some courses which are wrong. There is no satellite map that is "several" years old. they don't know when EVERY course is changed, and have to wait for someone to let them know, and then they update it.

you know, maybe SG5 users are just so mad about all the extra fees they have to pay so they try and defend the ridiculous prices any chance they get?

who knows. and for the record, i use neither. i just dont understand why all SG5 users are always hostile towards other gps users.

I have had a Igolf and Skycaddie -------- and now a UPro. My UPro is not going anywhere. Simple, easy and very accurite.

As stated above -------NO unit will be updated to every change on every course in the world on the day the change is started or on the day the change is completed. To think that would be the case is just plain silly.

I think it is only natural to get ticked off and defensive when you purchase something that you thought that had a superior reputation, just to find out that the product has so many inferior features and problems compared to the advancing technology of the competition that is out there today. Let them sulk.
