Quick skins/net score question

Recommended Posts

Played a skins game the other day with 2 friends, not to post for a handicap. I'm a 20 cap the other 2 are 10 and 12 I got 9 strokes. The way we play is the same as a regular skins game except that birdie is worth double IE.. if there aren't any carryovers 1 hole is worth 2 skins with a birdie.

On one hole I was to get a stroke on I got a par (4), so minus the stroke should that have been considered a birdie? IE I would have gotten double the skins.

It's only for fun but I know that there isn't anything in the rules about skins as far as I know.

They only gave me one skin for the win but not the double for the bird, I argued that if you were playing match play I would have written a 3 on the scorecard.

Opinions please and thanks.

Here's my opinion. I've always played where birdies doubling only for gross not net. It somewhat works against the higher handicap, but that's the way I've always played it.

Also, when you get a net 3, you should not be writing a 3 on the scorecard. You should always record the score you actually took on the hole. You would have a dot in the boxes where you get a stroke and then you could record your net on a separate line. Not a big deal when your playing casually with the guys, but it will definitely cause confusion in a tournament if you just record your net score. (See Rule 3-1)

Lastly, there's no reason why you can't play a skins game and still post a score for handicap purposes.

This really isn't a rules question, it's a question of betting convention. My view is that you all should have worked this out ahead of time, but since you didn't the net birdy should count double. After all, the purpose of your getting handicap strokes is to come close to evening things out, and your two competitors had a better chance of getting gross birdies on the other holes. That's a big advantage for them if you don't count your handicap for that purpose.

Anyway, if I were the lower handicap player, I'd give you the money. How did your friends respond to your position?

Sawgrass, both of my friends didn't think that it should count as double the skins. I didn't argue with them too much about it. I did bring up if someone else had birdied that hole wouldn't there be a double carry over, next hole worth 4. They agreed with that lol. It seems to me if you give strokes on a hole you shouldn't be able to take them back when it doesn't work out for them. Next time we play birdies aren't going to count for double.

And you're right this should have been worked out before we teed off.
