Mature Age College golf.

Yo, as the title says im a 21 year old living in Australia and wondering about College in the States.

 

I've been out of High School for 3 years now and will be going to University next year here in Australia. Anyways I played golf from the age of 6 till I was 16, at that age i was playing off a handicap fluctuating around 3 and my scoring average for tournament golf within my state was around 76. That was 4 years ago now and at that time I was looking to play college golf in the US until I gave the sport a break for pressure/mental reasons.

 

After next year I was thinking of transferring to a US college after one year of good results here and continuing a degree and playing college golf. Obviously I will need to be back into the swing (literally), but I honestly think I will be back at the level I was at or higher after a few months of commitment.

 

Anyway the question is, is if this is possible, can I still play on a college golf team at my age?.

You can definitely still play at your age. I think you'll need one summer of posting a few good tournament results which you can then send as a resume to a few college coaches in the states.

Every year you go to school outside the US, you lose years of eligibility though. So be careful not to wait too long coming to the US for school, as you only have 5 years of playing eligibility.

Exactly yes.

Just make sure you don't wait too long.

And purchase the Ping College Golf Guide, seriously get some results under your belt and just email coaches cold. 90% will at least respond.

Obviously don't try for the Florida's, USC's and Stanford's...start small get some offers and go from there, there is no shame playing for any D-1 school, so don't be disheartened if the big school's don't email you back, i assume they would get hundreds or thousands of emails about their golf program.

Just get some results under your belt to build your resume and you should have no problem finding a school. Good Luck!

IDK about how the international part works, you'd have to ask the NCAA about that...but once you start college, you have 5 years to compete 4 years at the D-1 and D-2 levels. D-3 and NAIA the 5&4 restriction does not apply there.

Definately be looking at getting good results in the coming year in my studies and on the golf course.
