putter maintenance

I LOVE putters. and in the next few months i plan to get my first bettinard putter, and so the time nearing to when i get the putter i want to start learning proper putter care. I plan to use this putter in tournaments and rounds of golf so i want to know how i can keep my putter in perfect condition so it does not start looking bad and the value were to diminish which would be bad. So i would love any advice on proper putter care so i can keep my upcoming putter in great condition.

All i do is wipe the putter free of any water or sand it may have picked up with a clean towel and always use the putter cover after each use. Seems to be pretty simple but effective.

First off

The biggest step is to always use your headcover. Take it off when walking onto the green and put it back on before the putter goes in the bag. Putter should never be in the bag without a headcover! This will protect any kind of putter.

The second thing to consider is the head material. If it is a carbon head you have a much higher chance of rust forming. Some finishes claim to be maintenance free on carbon but rust can still form where the plating wears on the sole, etc. For most black oxide carbon putter heads, you should spray the head down with silicone lubricant from the hardware store (I use Liquid Wrench) and wipe it off lightly, leaving a light layer of silicone. You can also spray a little bit into the headcover so that when you take the putter in and out, it gets re-coated. After the round, run hot water over the putter head, carefully dry it with a microfiber cloth, and re-apply the silicone. That should keep rust from forming.

if the putter is DASS (stainless steel) it is basically maintenance free and you won't have to spry it with silicone as it won't rust.

Aside from always using your headcover, you might consider applying PutterTape to the sole of your putter. More information can be found on the forum at puttertalk.com. I think puttertape is mainly for TP Mills putters but you might find a piece that will fit your Bettinardi just as well. It's a piece of clear tape made by 3M which is cut to the shape of your putter's sole and protects it from fertilizer, water, and sand on the greens. I have some on my TP Mills Huey and it is great peace of mind for putting on fertilized or slightly sandy greens.

Thanks for the replies in the first place. And I will make sure to do what you have said. and if i may combine two topics in one, can anyone suggest a good place that i can purchase a bettinardi putter. at the time i am looking at Bettinardi LTD but i would like to see if there is any where else that i should check out. Either a physical store in Orange county California or another website where i can purchase bettinardi putters. Any help will be welcomed and thanks again for the replies

A putter is a golf club, it is a tool made to accomplish a given task. Over time, it will begin to show some wear, even with proper care, that is normal. If you want it to remain perfect, put it in a case, and hang it on the wall. Do you buy golf clubs to play the game, or to look at, and admire?? Enjoy your putter, use it as it was meant to be used, and care for it properly, after all, its a golf club, not an investment.

I'm sure there are plenty of members of this BBS who are yippy enough with their putting without worrying about how much fertilizer the greenkeeper used last week as well! Next thing we'll all be afraid to touch our pretty ladies for fear of soiling them a little as well!
