Did anybody else see Jesper Parnevik on the 13th hole today? He missed a 6 foot putt and then on his way to the ball he made a scuff mark on the the green with one of his feet. Before he tapped in for bogey he tapped down the mark he made on the green. Isn't this a violation? Do you think the tour will catch it?

If it was an accidental mark then I don't think it is. Only if he was using his foot to test the green would it be considered a violation. He may have been trying to get something out of his spikes, but either way the green is not the place to do it.

He was walking to his 2 foot tap in putt and on his way to the ball he tripped and made the mark. Is it a penalty?

In all honesty, and someone can correct me if I'm wrong, I don't think it's a violation as players are allowed to fix ball marks on the green.

 

If the area in question was in the line of his putt and he was attempting to improve his line, which I don't think it was, then it's not a violation.

I don't want to kill this but I always thought that a player was not allowed to repair his or her spike marks until they had completed the corresponding hole. If this is still the case, I think Jesper broke the rule.

Well . . . Tiger dragged his putter on the green at the US Open last year- no penalty there. And that was before he putted out.

 

I didn't see Jesper's deal so I'll have to wait and see it on my ReplayTV.

Since the scuff mark was on the opposite side of the hole and not in the line of his putt he did not break any rules by repairing the mark that he made. If it was in his line then yes he would be in violation of rule 16-1.

 

Rule 16-1c permits the repair of old hole plugs and ball marks but does not permit the repair of spike damage or other irregularities of surface on the putting green if they are on a player`s line of play or putt or might assist him in his subsequent play of the hole.

So as far as the spike mark is not in a players line it can be repaired?

Yes as long as it is not in the line of your putt through the hole you can repair it. So if you have a putt and there is a spike mark on the opposite side of the hole that would be in your line if you missed the putt you can not repair it because that would assist you in subsequent play of the hole. As I saw it, Jesper stepped to his right after he missed his putt and made a scuff mark. Because he stepped to the right the scuff mark was not in line with his next putt and therefore no violation of rule 16-1 because it would not assist him in subsequent play of the hole.

So let's say Jesper had missed the short putt for bogey. If it rimmed out and put the scuff mark he made and repaired between him and the hole, would it have been a penalty?

I remember seeing Tiger drag his putter twice on the 2nd hole at La Costa at this years Match play.

It would had to have been a heck of a rim out. Remember it was a 6 foot putt to start with. His scuff mark was by where he was putting from and his putt went about 2 feet past the hole. So he would of had to hit his 2 foot putt 7 to 8 feet for this to come in play. If you read the rules the main key is "might assist him in his subsequent play of the hole." If tapping down a spike mark will assist you in your putt or subsequent putt you have violated rule 16. Jesper did nothing wrong, except for wearing a tie and orange sweat bands on a golf course.

Some of you guys have to understand the original post better before sharing your opinion. The rule violation in question is about how he fixed the marks, NOT about how he made the marks. So, the comparison to Tiger's case is totally off.
