There are a few other things.. for one, the style of the "1" on the soleplate is much different from the original.. Take a close look at the ebay item, and then check out my post of the original 693s I am refinishing. The remake has a "1" that is larger, a little wider base, and is in a different spot in relation to the "Mac. Tourney" stamp.. Also, the toe stamp's font is slightly different as well.
The refinish looks nice and shiny, and if it was original it would not be as glossy. One would say "Well maybe it has a fresh finish on it".. true, but if that was the case than the neck numbers almost certainly would not be in the like new condition they appear to be.
Finally, assuming that the finish on the club is original, a dead giveaway would be that the face screws are flush, but not lined up perpendicular to the scoring lines. True they could have "wiggled" out, thus being a bit off, but assuming that was the case they would not be flush with the face, which they appear to be.

If anybody is interested in a mid to late 1980s MacGregor persimmon driver IMO this model is one of the best. It was only made for 1 year (1986), they yr. Jack won the Masters. I have one and its a really nice head and as solid as most I've hit. Originally came in Mahogany finish, this might have been refinished black, but it looks to be in top shape. There looks to be an "inspected by" sticker over the bore thru, so this black finish is most likely original, plus I see a serial number, so its probably is.

Hey Fred~
It looks to me that the corner of the heel is breaking down, what do you see? It looks like dry rot, but it could just be flaking paint, although I have never seen paint flake like that on a head.. I would be wary of this one.. I think you are right about the refinish.. Ever one I have seen has been Mahogany stained. I love the sweep back soleplates!

I did see that spot your taking about in the heel and thought that too, but after really looking to me the wood looks solid and I was thinking the clear coat is just cracking, but I could be wrong. Hey, bought a Nikon D3000 SLR today, so u know what that means, Fred goes to town again with some pics!!! Where is my Texan, come here boy... LOL.

they look just like miller's set from his 63 at oakmont (replacing 'the 985' with 'Johnny Miller' of course). and of course they are the predecessor to my beloved MacCobras. so, if anybody wants to buy them and submit them to me for 'testing' i'd be happy to do it. and i've got a couple sets of the MacCobras for comparisons sake.

I just pulled the trigger after scouring the Bay and found a sweet looking set of 1972 Apex "classic". 2-E and lucky for me, they're Apex 3 shaft. (I don't have the swing speed or ego to play a 4/stiff) These will compliment my almost identical '71 bounce sole 2-E.

Love those, but the price seems a bit high. Someone was selling just the driver a month or so ago that was in nearly perfect condition, perhaps not the best grain, but it went for $52.

Purchased a Mizuno 3 wood and a 1968 MacGregor DX 5 wood together off ebay in order to complete the set I used when I was a youngster. My wife urged me to keep my old clubs: 1978ish Cobra persimmon driver, 1978ish red dot Australian Blades. Glad she did. I've regripped my driver and the odd numbered irons (Star grips) and now have a good set for playing nine holes on a Sunday afternoon. Have to say the seller did a great job of refinishing these woods - just beautiful.
