Rare MacGregor Tourney M05B Utility Club

Here is my latest pickup.. Its a circa 1954 Tourney M05B 5 wood. I have had and refinished several M05 and M06 woods, but this is the only "B" model I have seen.

Its got some over spray on it, obscuring some of the crown stamp, but I am positive that under all the ugly finish the stamp is nice and deep. The fiber insert will need to be reset, but that is not uncommon with these old Macs

I tried to get a good shot of the neck, which has the "Swan Neck" shape to it. Apparently it was supposed to add strength.. The only models that had this neck were the M0 utilities, and now and then you see M65s with this neck, as far as I know those are the only clubs made with the swan neck.. I think it looks really cool.

I will add pics to the post as I make progress on refinishing this one! It will need to have the soleplate screw at 9:00 changed.. the one in there now I think is a replacement, and the head is stripped..

I plan on starting this in a week or so.. I have a few refinish projects in the works for a fellow WRXer, so his stuff comes before mine.. I cant wait to finish this one! Original shaft is in great shape, original leather wrap grip is nice also.

The club is 40.5 inches, Swingweight is C9, Loft 22"

Update

I have done most of the work to the plate, and have also reset the insert, replacing the top screw, which was chewed up. I also replaced 2 screws on the soleplate; the screws at the 9:00 and 1:00 positions.

The head has been stripped, and is just about ready for stain. The crown stamp is nice, and should look great. I just need to clean up the face a touch more, and buff out the sole plate, then paintfill.

Wow John, thats a cool looking wood. I've never seen one of those. I'll be by sometimes next week with the M43T hand off for the Doctor and will have to check that out. Nice pick up!

The difference between the before and after of the sole plate is like magic...I've never seen a "work in progress".. please keep the pics coming!

Very nice persimmonpal!

Nice satin finish on the soleplate. Speaking of the soleplate,
look how deep the stampings are by MacGregor. Its amazing the club only has a C-9
swingweight with that huge brass soleplate and backweight!

Atta boy, John! That's looking great!

The sole plate cleaned up very nicely and all the dings are buffed out - it looks new.

And yes, also a great strike on the sole plate... rather uncommon for MacGregor, based on mine, as an example..

What stain and paint combo are you planning?

Thanks for the comments! I love these "MO" woods.. I have had a few and they all seem to have had nice deep plate stamps.. I was lucky this one did, because I was able to get most of the dings out witout losing any of the stamps.. After all the stripping and sanding, the swingweight is c 6 1/2.. with finish it will get right back to where it was..
I was planning on doing an Armour Mahogany, and although the original crown stamp was done in red, I will probably do the crown stamp in gold, plate stamps black and face lines white..

Nice work. I can't believe how well that sole plate came out. Looks like new. That will be a great club to have in your vintage bag. Probably could go about 185 to 195 yards maybe. Can't wait to see the end result of this project.
