WEEKEND TRIP TO LOUISVILLE

WHAT IS SOME GOOD GOLF IN THIS AREA???

Im from Indianapolis area getting ready to head to Louisville in a couple weeks with a few friends for a little warmer weather to start off the golf season any suggestions of some nice courses???

I'd love to play there but its private .... how do you get on to a private club such as Vallaha? Any other courses in the area open to public . we would like to play 36 holes on sat and 18 on sunday....

A couple of great public courses around Louisville are Nevel Meade

Funnier that I am looking at the same thread on here... I've been scouting course possibilities all day btw. I am sure you already knew that though. We've talked about Champion's Pointe enough, think it would be warm enough / green enough yet?

Need to go play Heritage Hill Golf Club. New club, only been open for 3 years. Very nice. Just outside of Louisville, 65 south.

Drove down from northern michigan and played 36 at Covered Bridge last Friday and 36 at Champions Point on Saturday. Gotta say I prefer Covered Bridge. Little easier, but after the winter layoff I don't need a 140+ slope right out of the gate. IMHO 16,17,18 at Champions Point are a disaster. If you have played there you know what I'm saying.

Check out Chariot Run. It's Horseshoe Southern Indiana's course associated with their casino. I haven't been out there yet this year, but it's a great track.

I am very happy to have found this site and more specifically this forum. I have just moved to Kentucky and started to attempt to learn about the local courses. I am about thirty miles south of Louisville at Fort Knox so I have not played any of the courses in the city. I played the course at Knox and another course in a little tiny town called Vine Grove. Both were played based soley on being close by and me being able to get out of the office early. It sounds like there are plenty of courses within an hours drive to get excited about. I am trying to knock the rust off before we head to Orlando in two weeks. Looking forward to playing the Disney courses again but especially looking forward to playing Grand Cyprus for the first time.

Looks like the Indiana boys are chompin at the bit to play some golf. Weather looks great the next couple of days, but I don't think there are any decent greens yet around here.

+1 for Heritage Hill. Ranked as the #10 Best New Public Course in America for 2008 by Golf Digest and recently ranked as #3 Public Course in Kentucky by Golfweek.

The best of the best have certainly been listed here, so I will only rank the choices from my point of view...

1) Heritage Hill - great layout that I have unfortunately not played since the year they opened. I imagine the conditions (read: maturity) have caught up with the design at this point.
2) Champions Pointe - I didn't like this one the first time I played it, but it has grown on me. I think the closing hole really leaves a golfer with a bad taste (weird, weird hole IMO).
3) Covered Bridge - This and Champions Pointe are both Fuzzy Zoeller designs. I haven't played it in years, but have a gift certificate I plan to use as soon as I can get an R&R pass from the missus (new baby at home = little golf for Chris).
4) Quail Chase - There are 27 holes at this facility. Can be crowded on the weekends from my experience. The East 9 is the best of the group... it's a toss-up between the other two.
5) Nevel Meade - Very open plot of land, meaning you will battle the wind. My last few visits, it always seems like there is construction work going on making a racket. This would probably bump up a spot or two if not for the "residential interference".
HONORABLE MENTION: Charlie Vettiner - The nicest muni in Louisville and, frankly, the only one I'd pay to play. It is at its best in the spring, so if you are ever going to play it now would be the time.

I would say Nevel Meade and Heritage Hill are must plays. I live pretty close (5 minutes) from Nevel Meade. If anyone ever wants to play on a monday during the summer, I would gladly play. Also, if you know anyone who belongs to the local private clubs, specifically (TPC) Valhalla and Audubon, (not Hunting Creek right now, we are redesigning our course this year, haha), you should definitely try to play a round at one of those.
