Cheaper alternative to Pro V1x?

Yellow Jacket

Recommended Posts

I've never actually played the Pro V1x but the Pro V1 spins a little too much for me so I assume the Pro V1x is the right ball for me. The Pro V1/V1x are $40/dozen...but the Wilson TX4 is $30, and the Dunlop LoCo Tour and Hogan The Hawk are $25/dozen. The TX4 and LoCo Tour are their flagship balls but The Hawk is not. They all have urethane covers but then again, so does the Bridgestone e5 and that thing is a rock.

The NXT doesn't spin enough on chip shots and the Black Max spins too much on every shot.

Thoughts, or should I just spend the extra $10/dozen on the Pro V1x?

what about recycled prov1's and v1x's?

i get all mine from rockbottomgolf and they can easily pass for new and be had for $65 for 3 dozen.

What does it mean when they are recycled? Waterlogged? Found on the course?

On top of my head if i do want to try are:

Callaway HX tour

Bridgestone B330

Srixon Z-UR

They are just a great balls, In fact I tried them all! ;)

Of course they have a slight different on their feel and durability to each other, but considering the perfomance aspect of it...After a while I can grew and over come by understanding what i have to compensate and learn. They are just just not far a part, plus $$$ wise are not so much different at the end.

At the end My biggest consideration picking the right ball for my game are the one that give me a better distance control and spin control around the green. Feel on the putter ? I can compensate by playing inserted putter or no insert, or even stainless versus carbon steel.

My 2 cents!

maybe u should try the prov1x before declaring it the "right ball" for you? just a thought.

the v1 and v1x are extremely different from each other when it comes to performance characteristics.

From what I can tell, the V1x will be lower spinning on longer shots (which I need) while retaining almost all of the spin on chip/pitch shots (which I also need). Am I missing something?

For me the V1x spun noticeably less than the V1 around the greens and on wedge shots. The One Platinum and the B330S have worked very well for me, I feel they're pretty much right in between the V1 and V1x. I don't mind giving up a few yards off the driver, if it gets me better control around the greens. I'm probably gonna try the new TM TP Red the next time, just to see how that compares to the NOP and B330S.

Here's my two cents - you can pay approx $2/ball or $5/ball. In my neighborhood, a round of golf walking is about $40 on a muni. Assuming you lose 1 ball and you play the high priced ball, the round costs $45. If you play the low priced ball, the round cost $42.

If you lose 9 balls, like I did recently on a course where the only landing areas I could see were on the par 3s, playing the high priced balls get to be VERY expensive. But most of the time I lose 1 or none (or 2) on a round.

For the theoritical $3 difference per round, I want the high end ball on the end of those occasional great shots JUST IN CASE it was the ball and not all the practice I put in. After that, it's just a matter of picking the high end ball that works best for you (on the courses you play). After all, if you only had one to choose from, what would you rather have; ProV1xs or a beer? ;)

That's an interestingly quantitative way to look at it. In my case, rounds are $20 walking on the course I'm qualifying at for the Pub Links. Also, it's more accurate to say it's the difference between $2/ball and $3.50/ball.

However, it is not the ball if I hit a good shot :crazy2:

Since I need a ball with playing characteristics close to the ball I will use in tournaments, I went with the dozen of pearl and grade 2 balls from above. I'll take a pearl and see how it compares to a grade 2 when they arrive (hopefully by Wednesday)
