My mixed bag I played with today

Recommended Posts

Got out this afternoon admittedly only for 12 holes or so but took this selection out with me

1968 Wilson Dynapower irons with old original leather grips which although looked in great condition are as slippery as eel after a bath in oil.

Mac 693T 3 Wood

Mac W25MT 4 Wood

Peter Broadbent handmade Driver

Wilson FG-17 Sand Iron

Ping Eye 2 1 Iron

A bit of a mixture through the ages covering ever decade from 1950's through to 2000's (oddessy putter....... I know, I know.... I'm ashamed) Can't say I played particuarly well but still very enjoyable all the same

They are great irons John, struggled with them today a little as I found I was leaving the face open at contact. I found I was havng to choke the grip for fear of it flying out of my hands, even worse it rained thankfully for only 10 mins or so. Did hit a rasper of a 2 iron, that grip has a little more grip on it than the others, but to change the grips would be a sin.

Forgot to add the ball in use, it's a repro of the Dunlop 65 1.62 sized ball, great little ball

You can just about tell from the photo's it is a little smaller than a pro vi next to it. Not sure if you guys in the US have ever used this size ball before? was it only available/legal in the uk?

Cheers guys I need a shave myself, the misses might be a little confused seeing me dissapear into the bathroom with my golf clubs while going for a shave!

John absolutely, golf any time of the year however good/bad is always great, regardless of the frustration it brings! ;)

so, you're saying you've got a reproduction of the old small british ball? how can i get my hands on some? (i googled 'dunlop 65 golf ball' and didn't really find much.) i've always wanted to have a go with the small ball. how does it play? does it really go like 20% further? (further than what is the obvious question as i don't have any 60's big balls to compare it to.) how soft does it feel?

anyway, awesome.

Astamm,

Yes these are a repro of the old 1.62 Dunlop 65. As for going further than a ball from the era I could'nt say but they certainly dont go further than modern day balls. I've bought a few dozen of them which I use, they are decent quality balls, and just top of that retro feel.

I'm looking to buy some a few more dozen of these so if you are interested I can purchase them and post them onto if you so wish. pm if you are interested

2oneputt, I've been meaning to shaft it up, it's a 2 iron which I bought with a load of other Hogan 2 irons, this one has been rechromed and done excellently.

thanks moaningm! seller ships internationally, so i just put in an order. now if i can only find a windy links to play them on... and i love that package design.

i've always been fascinated by these balls. and, i'm a huge fan of the old shell matches. i was always fascinated by what players were playing what ball (when playing outside of north america, of course). especially when the players would switch balls during a round. small ball for a 5 par and big ball for a 3 was pretty common.

in the palmer vs. breyer match (to be shown soon on TGC) from the bahamas, palmer has the announcer remind the viewers several times that he's using the big ball while breyer's using the small one because he didn't want his fans to think he was being out driven. and sure enough, breyer was blowing it by him.

Great stuff, the course I played today is an out and out links course and it was blowing pretty hard, 2nd hole 420 yards Driver 1 iron into the bunker short right, the 14th then which runs parrallel to the 2nd 480 yards - 1 iron, 4 wood to 20 feet!!!! both using the lil Dunlop 65

You still find the odd original Dunlpo 65 balls around, particuarly in old practice bags and usually in pretty beat up condition, but they are getting few and far between these days!

So were the 1.62 balls allowed in PGA events back then?

no. they weren't allowed in any events governed by the usga, which governed the game in the US, Mexico, and Canada then (I think). but, of course, shell matches were played worldwide so whenever they were outside of those areas, the matches were governed by the R & A, and the small ball was of course allowed. the US pros rarely used it, but the foreign pros often did. but, even the US pros would pull one out sometimes for a 5 par. sometimes a US pro would use it if he'd play ryder/walker cup matches or the open, because then he'd be used to it.

where did you play today? i'm forever jealous of you guys, a links course for me is just an oasis. we've got some old courses around my parts, but they're just not like that at all.

A collection of Hogan 2 irons... genius!

I bought them from a guy in the US, he had an unbelievable collection of Hogan 2 irons (20+) he had collected over the years, I bought 5 I think off him, I was only after a Hogan Medallion 2 iron at the time to complete a set of mine, and they were so cheap I decided to sample a few more.... :)

So what was the score when the Ryder cup was played in America? was it not run jointly by the R+A and the PGA back then?

If you're over this way, give me a shout and I'll show ya where not to hit it, I know all those places well!

tenby looks incredible. just the place for a game with persimmons and the small ball i'd say. nothing like that around here, sadly. i'm reading Donald Steel's Classic Golf Links of England, Scotland, Wales, and Ireland and tenby got a nice write up. the 4th with the blind approach and the bell looks fantastic.

it's the location of the course that determines which governing body's rules apply. so, on these shores, it's always been the big ball. i just meant that a lot of US players didn't have much playing experience in R & A locales unless they'd played away in the ryder cup or went to an open, which was fairly rare in those days.

Nice looking Wilson Staffs, still some of the most beautiful old-school irons ever made. I still have mine that I learned the game with, maybe I'll take them out and play a few rounds with them this year. Any danger in damaging our old woods with these new golfballs? I have my old Wilson Staff II Strata-Bloc woods that I inherited from my grandfather and would not want to damage them.
