"14 Hole Player"

What is a "14 Hole Player"? A junior golfer that averages between 74-79, but consistently has three or four bad holes in each round. Most College Golf Coaches are looking for a recruit with the commitment and talent to improve.

 

The reality is coaches want to find out a recruit's weaknesses because they can then assess how much a recruit will continue to improve during college.

A "14 Hole Player" is one that loses focus and makes stupid mistakes. We all know how it can snowball after that...I am one who, more likely than not, will birdie after a triple. I don't know why, it just usually works out that way.

I think I just need to find a way to stop the bleeding, like if I am under trees after my drive puch out and make a bogey and maybe a par as apposed to going for a opening.

i used to be this a couple of months ago
althought i was more of a 16 hole player lol

slowly getting that out of my system, if its the last few holes, just need to focus and take a little extra time over a shot

I'm in my 10th year of competitive golf. I was a 4-year starter at the NCAA D-II level and I am still a 16-hole player. Pretty easy for me to go from -5 to +1 in a couple of holes. It's frustrating.

This is definitely more mental errors than anything else.............increase your mental game and you wont have these problems..........once you get to the top level of competition it is definitely more mental than anything else.

I am definately a 14 hole player yesterday -2 through 15 end up shooting 75. Its like I have golf course A.D.D and I cant help it the swing just falls apart no matter what. However the 14th hole on my course is 240 yard par 3 over water but still IT SUCKS!

they didnt belive me when i said i was going to go under par on the back they just laughed and said youll be lucky to break a 100

There a lot of ways to be a 14 hole player. Although the mental theme is a good one. You also have to consider when/where in the round this is happening. What kind of shot triggers it. Everybody is different - you need to give your game an honest assessment.

FYI .... this is a pretty common and is relative (in terms of score) to everyone. I battle 2 scenarios frequently.

1. I do a good job avoiding the big number by playing smart.
2. I make a lot of bogeys down the stretch on tough holes because I am trying to avoid the big number.

I used to be this way, until about 3 or 4 weeks ago. I had one of those"revelations" I was playing in one of my junior tour tourneys, and i kinda flared out one of my drives right. I was about to pull a 5 iron to try to reach it in two (par 5) from rough and trees sorta in between the green and me. Instead, I decided to lay up to right at 50 yards and give my chance an "up and down" for birdie. So i hit a strong p wedge and got my number and got a birdie, instead of a potential bogey or worse. Now, since I can go fairly deep, I use 3 wood off the tee more, and not risk the bad drive. I can still pump a 260-270 3 wood off the tee. This has turned into a go-to move for me, and now instead of say, 2 birdies a round, I've gone to more like 4-6. I'm also getting down to par, instead 78-79ish. i'm no longer a 14 hole player. More of a 17 hole player with that one bad hole. FML
