Open RC surgery..who's been there?

Gents,

I had open RC surgery 2 weeks ago and am going a little nuts. I had a total knee replacement last year and was just getting my game back when a 27 year old shoulder injury caught up with me. I really think after this I'm going to kick some butt. My goal is to try and qualify for the US Senior Amateur this Sept/Oct.

Any sympathy/encouragement would be appreciated. Anyone else had this done??? Am I too optimistic?

Have had torn RC's in both shoulders. From my experience you are going to have to be very, very patient. The convalescense time for RC surgery
is much longer than either hip or knee replacement. If you push things and re-tear the RC, you will be even longer recovering after a second surgery. Worst case senerio, I am now playing golf with a permanently torn, inoperable, RC tear in myright shoulder. Fortunately, I am right handed. Patience and physical therapy are your best hope.

Full recovery = 10-12 months

DON'T PUSH IT

The shoulder recovery is much longer and harder than knee surgery. If you're a digger.... just makes it tougher.

Rehab properly and be ready for next years US Senior Amateur.

BTW, what did your Dr. say??

I feel your pain. Week ago yesterday I had a full shoulder replacement. They say it's just like having a RC done. Two years ago Dec. I had my right hip replaced ( ceramic on ceramic ). I played in 6 weeks and it was one of the best things I have done for my worn out body. Hoping to be ready in 3 months.

my grandfather had RC surgery a few years ago and he cant lift his shoulder very well, or for very long. took a LONGGG time for him to even get real mobility. you may have your hopes set high but technology has changed and depends on the injury aswell. i think youll be taking this entire season off

Just had my right done nov 16 rc spurr labrum and bicept tendon had my left done in 03. The doctor is everything and scope is the only way most modern op doctors will use scope only .A big diff in speed of recovery. Be very patient and keep your shoulder immobalized as much as possible. Will take 4 months before you can play and a year to get close to your current game and 2yrs before it will feel completely normal again but will still be weaker.

Doctor is everything--and make sure your surgery IS NOT towards the end of the doctor's schedule that day. Doctor's get tired too, get in a rush etc and problems are more common at end of the day.

I had an RC reconstruction done about 4 years ago now. Total time before I was back in the weight room and competing in any form of athletics at 100% was 14 months post. From people I talk to my aggressive PT helped cut time of healing by 6-9 months.

I had my right shoulder done via scope in January and I started playing golf in April. I was in PT for 12 weeks and continue PT on my own now. My range of motion is only 80% now...improving very slowly. Still have some pain and soreness. My Doc says I will make a full recovery but it will prolly take a year or more. My golf game is horrid! Keep after it, but take it slow.

I had a Shoulder Impingement and RC repair done in November of 2005. I have a 5 inch long scar and the surgery was done by an older surgeon the old fashioned way. Rehab and Therapy were absolutely brutal, but I was golfing by spring and playing Tennis pain free by summer. It was well worth it and I have had zero symptoms since. My surgeon, who has done both types, only guaranteed long term results cutting me open.
