? About Cart Path

What are the rules concerning a ball that rests on or directy against the cart path making it unplayable?? Thanks in advance :yahoo:

the ball rests on a cartpath you can either play it or take relief:

when taking relief you find your nearest point of relief taking you completely off the carthpath...you then assume your stance....and take one club length from there....this is how you take your FREE relief from a cartpath..

yes, no penalty, no closer... and it's important to note that you take your stance w/the club you are most likely to hit from there & mark... you can then pull a longer club to determine the one club length distance from said mark, no closer to the hole.

the key is taking 'complete' relief too... there are videos here showing various iterations of rule 24-2, including one showing Payne Stewart failing to take complete relief.

It's it true that your "closest" relief could possibly make your next shot an unplayable lie? So then your best bet would be to just hit it off the path?

absolutely! that's why it's best to never touch the ball until all the assessments/measurements have been done... you might just end up playing it where it lies!

Rules question -cart path drop- Hope this makes sense! I was in a match play situation against an opponent that drove his ball up next to the cart path and behind a large oak tree that blocked his view of the green. Here is where it gets interesting..... He hits his irons and driver right handed but putts left handed. Using his irons he would not have been standing on the cart path. But by taking a stance with his putter, he was standing on the cart path thus he was able to take a "free" drop that gave him a line to the green. He then used a right handed iron to hit the shot to the green.

I contested that he was supposed to take his stance with the club he intended to use to play his next shot. Then if he was standing on the cart path he could take his drop from there.

He insisted that you did not have to, and that you could take your drop with any club in the bag.

This was on the 17th, and I was one up. I lost the hole and the next to lose the match. What would the ruling be with concerns to the drop and the match? Some coin and lots of pride on the line.... the opponent was my scratch handicap brother!

if he was against the path he could take relief, BUT needs to use club most likely to hit next... rules are rules... Nearest relief is also sometimes miss used :) thats' loss of hole i do believe

You can also drop it on the coplete relief part and hope it jumps back on the cart path and goes no closer to the hole and ends up in a good spot. I have had that happen to me in a college golf tourney and they let it go. I didn't do it my playing partner did and I asked how that was legal and they kinda just beat around the bush with it. You can also do what tiger did yesturday on 11 to help yourself out too. Bending the rules but hey He has to live with cheating so.
