Hilton Head --where to stay??

I am beginning the process of planning to stay in Hilton Head for a couple of weeks to play some golf.

 

I have read the threads on the golf course... however, a more basic question... Where to stay??

 

We are using VRBO, and looking for a pet-friendly place. There are lots of options..

 

Someone suggested since I am interested in golf, we stay at either the Palmetto Dunes or Sea Pines areas. However, even in those.. there are lots of villas/options.

 

Any ideas on great places to stay OR to avoid. THANKS

palmetto Dunes!!!! we had a great time there. Not sure about the ones that are pet friendly, but we stayed at Captain's Walk and had an amazing view. You are right next to George Fazio course, Arthur Hills, and one other (can't remember the name). Great courses, great area. I recommend it.

Great to hear you liked Captains Walk. We have owned a villa there for the past 16 years and just love it. Palmetto Dunes has a lot to offer. Ocean, bikes, kayak, golf and great dining. Oh, the other course is the Jones course (my favorite).

What are you looking for? Condo? Hotel? Home? The only issue you might have is pet friendly. A LOT of rentals ban pets. Sea Pines has plenty of rentals and all of the other amenities.

We've stayed at Sea Pines for every one of our 10 or so visits to HH. Their Heritage villas are close to tennis, Harbortown, pools, etc.

It depends when you are going. Sea Pines in particular can get very congested in the high season. Just getting and and out of the plantation (and around the traffic circle) can be a major headache at peak times. The other thing about Sea Pines is if you stay at South Beach or near Harbour Town, you've got a bit of a drive from the entry gate to get there, and that can get old after a while. Some people don't mind, others do.

We used visit for a couple months in the winter, and we would rent on the ocean side of N. Forest Beach. That way we could take our dogs to the beach without having to cross N. Forest Beach Rd. However, I would avoid that area during peak season because it is crazy busy there. Palmetto Dunes and Shipyard offer a lot of options, although the golf at Shipyard isn't very good.

Just got back from a best ball tourney at Palmetto Dunes and liked it. We just stayed at the Hilton Ocean resort and for a bunch of guys it was fine had kichenette, but plenty of condos in resort as well. We played all 3 course trent Jones, Fazio and hills. Of the 3 fazio and hills were harder best shape was the hills. Palmetto also has many other things to do as well, its a nice choice.
