Club Fitting in Anaheim

Going to CA next week, need a recommendation

I'm going to a conference in Cali next week and have a day to goof off, never had a good club fitting done, so I thought it might be a good chance. I had planned on going to Aviara Golf Academy and do the Taylor Made fitting, but was wondering if there were any other recommendations in the area, perhaps not just specific to one manufacturer?

You could go to Roger Dunn's Golf Shop in Anaheim. It's right off the 57 Freeway and Ball Rd. They have a driving range and Launch Monitor capabilities. They have the Callaway OptiFit cart and pretty much every major club manufacture in stock. Here's the address and phone number:

Not sure how far this place is from where you will be, but I have heard good positive reviews for maxout golf.

Here's a little diary of my fitting experience(s) in California last week. I've been playing over 30 years; played a little college golf, currently have about a 3 hdcp. And I hadn’t been on a monitor since I used an old Sportech monitor at a GolfUSA I worked at 15 years ago, so I had no clue what to expect.

 

After I hit a few balls to loosen up, he took my 5 iron and driver to measure the specs. I then hit my 5 iron and driver hooked to their shaft machine which he explains tells where I'm loading the shaft etc. I hit a few balls with each and he said I was in the stiff range with each and based on his measurements of my two clubs they both measured in the stiff range. Then, I hit my driver on the launch monitor, followed by a few drivers he recommended. After hitting my driver he said our goal today would be to get the ball speed up to 150, I was at 140. I tried the r7 425, the Adams RPM, FT-3 and a few others, with different shaft make-ups, he recommended that I try some lighter shafts specifically the ys-5 and the Diamana 53, which we did with some slight ball speed improvements and no dramatic increases in spin. Then he said he had a drill for me and asked me to swing it a few times like a baseball swing and try to hear the woosh... so I did... then he told me to lower it keeping that swing and the woosh in mind... (o.k. basically he was telling me that to get the ball speed up I needed to swing harder) Then we hit the irons, he goes and gets a MX-23 and an X-Tour, I hit them into the net and he asked me what I think... I'm hitting them into a net... he explains the forging process of the Mizuno irons and says he likes Mizunos and would recommend them. they feel o.k. (none of this was on the launch monitor...) then he gets the lie board and I hit my 5 iron three times and he says I need it 2 degrees flat... he asks how I like my Mizuno hybrids, I say I like them, not sure I like the stock Mizuno shaft in the 17*, he takes me back to their workshop and shows me an Aerotech shaft says I should give it a try, we then go out to where he has some different grips laid out, looks at my hands and asked me to grip an oversized grip, says that should work and tells me I need my grips built up +5. Tells me to make a fist and set it at my side, he does the same and says I'm standard length. Then we get my putter and go to the indoor putting green, I make 13 of 14 in a row and he asks me if I've tried counter balancing, I say no, so he sticks a weight in the butt in of my putter, I make 1 of 5 and he says if I want it they can do that for me while I wait... (uh, no I think I'll pass was my response.) Then he grabs a Mizuno and Callaway wedge we go back to the net, I hit a couple balls into the net with each and he asks me what I think... to which I reply, well, I'm hitting them into a net, he says he likes the Mizuno's.... I pay my $245, get a print out of my results and I'm out the door

 

Then the next day I asked the hotel where the nearest driving range was and they directed me 2 miles down the road to a place called the Islands and low and behold located there was the Roger Dunn place somebody else recommended. So of course I schedule a club fitting…. To make a long story somewhat shorter, I hit a few balls to loosen up, hit a r7 425, adams rpm, hi-bore, cobra all basically with stock shafts, their launch monitor numbers show similar ball speeds but higher spin rates, he then goes as gets the Callaway Opti-Fit and I try a number of different shafts, ultimately he recommends the Bassara, and he recommended that I look into a tour R7 425 or a tour tour Ft-3. Then I hit a few balls off a lie board with my 6 iron, then with some irons from the Ping cart, he recommends between 1 and 2 degree flat. I go in and he tells me if I sign up for their mailing list it’s half price… I pay my $15 get a print out of my results and I’m out the door.

thanks for the review on your fittings. I'm glad you did because I was thinking of getting fitted at Maxoutgolf. They told me that they would tell me through the fitting my optimal club head, shaft, and ball.

From your experience, I didn't see anything special compared to a simple fitting at Roger Dunn or Golfsmith.
