Hi guys,

Renting a house at Pga West for 2 weeks at Christmas, and looking for 3 or 4 different courses in the area to play. First time in California so looking for something reasonably close by. Also, will the courses be in good shape at this time of year?

Thanks a bunch!

If you do a search, there are a few posts on here about that area. But, I was there in July and played La Quinta Dunes and Mountain course. About a ten minute drive from where you are at if that. Both were nice, but the mountain course was awesome. The stadium course where you are at looked nice, but didn't get to play it. Since you are staying on that property you will get a deal on those three and I think they have two others. Indian springs was about a 20 Minute ride and looked like an awesome course. There are two courses on that resort. Only had lunch there cause it was super hot that day, but talking to a few people at the bar there they said it was really nice. Hope this helps. Keep us informed on where you went.

Go to Stand By Golf for that area and you will see when the course were overseeded and when they opened back up which should help with condition.

If you do not want to play at PGA West, Silver Rock is near by along with the Indio Casino Course Eagle Falls, and Terra Lago, to name a few. I get on a few Country Clubs when I am down that way so I add those to my mix.

Indian Wells has a few nice courses, I hear that Heritage Palms is a nice little course also.....Both are on Golf Now from time to time.

Have fun, as I am down that way for Thanksgiving.

My in-laws have a place in La Quinta and I go quite a few times each year.

First off- All the courses in the area will be in primo condition. These next few months are the 'bread and butter' for this area. Fairways should be firm, Greens should be smooth and firm- you shouldn't see plug marks or anything like that. Courses start overseeding from early september to October and open around November 1. They can't afford to be closed this time of year.

My recommendations-

Silver Rock is a must play. Palmer design, gives you everything you want- I'm a long hitter and have never played the tips- 7700 yards or so
Eagle Falls- just north of I-10, the casino course. Fun track, a little tighter than others but very playable, great value.
Stadium TPC- overrated and way over priced. Actually, every course at PGA west is that way except the Norman course which is off property.
La Quinta Mtn course- Has 6 great holes. the front is kinda boring.
Westin- Gary Player course. I enjoyed this more than I thought I would. it's been a year since I played it but I remember saying I would play it again.
Shadow Ridge- Faldo course- great layout for a resort course. very playable. if you're striking well you will score well. i really enjoy this one, almost as much as Silver Rock
Terra Lago- I'd stay away from the South course, it's had some issues the last few years. The North course is a better layout and much more beautiful.

Definitely use Stand By Golf- you will save $$$ by doing this. There is no better way in this area to book a tee time!!! 760.321.2665 or standbygolf.com. i prefer to call in to book tee times becasue the website tee sheet seems to not work as well. Also you will be able to talk to the operators that are local and tell you about the courses.

Have a great time! I was there at the end of september and my back went out the day after I got there. played Silver Rock in massive pain. layed on the floor for the next 6 days and came home to have surgery... what a great 30th birthday present :(
