Sun Mountain Screw-up

Bag will not fit cart
I have been a fan of Sun Mountain products, bags and carts for many years. I bought one of their push carts not too long after they came out. But I started carrying my bag again and put the cart away. I want to start walking more now and recently bought a Sun Mountain 4/5 bag. I really like the bag but the foot that activates the legs is too big. It does not fit on a Sun Mountain cart. Why aren't their products made to fit their own products? I need to get a Bagboy or some other cart? I don't think so. I called them and they were going to get back with me, right. I am still waiting.

They say the bag is made for carrying. If that is so why do they have a velcro strip to keep the legs from extending for use on a cart? (It does not fit on a regular cart well either.) So I bought an Ogio and we'll see how that goes. I have to say I am very disappointed in Sun Mountain. They are assembled in Montana and I like to support American products. Rant over. ;-)

If you want a bag that fits the cart perfectly, the Speed Cart Bags are great.
Yes, there is a lack of truly "multi-purpose" bags on the market. Going to a shop with push carts and bags that you can test them out together is about the only way to get one that fits for sure, or get peoples' advice BEFORE purchase that have found stand bags that have fit on them. SM didn't change the design of the bag after you purchased or tell you that it fits on a speed cart. I think your rant is misguided. It was avoidable. Sorry.

There is a thread that was just started in the Bag forum and it was a review of the 2011 4.5. He states that the new 4.5 fits perfectly in a riding cart and works perfectly well with his Sun Mountain V1 push cart. I just bought a 2011 3.5 to pair up with a new 2011 Sun Mountain Micro Cart, it is like they were made to work together. I also tested the new 4.5 and it worked equally well in all the major push carts.

2011 is awesome. I owned the 2010 and sold it the instant the 2011's were confirmed to fit the Carts. Perfect Bag.

Look for the CFB at the bottom. Cart Friendly Bag.

I have a question for those of you using the Sun Mountain Four 5 (or any other stand bag w/ the 14-way top & individual club slots) -

I have heard that the 14 way top actually makes the bag chatter worse - do you find that to be true? I am very interested in the bag, especially now that the 2011 version fits well on carts, but I don't want my new forged irons getting banged up more than they need to.

I saw on a SM press release that their cart-friendly bottom on their carry bags is designed for RIDING carts.
I saw no mention of how they work with the speed carts. Maybe they are designed for the Speed carts too now, but that wasn't the impression I got from their press release.

Surely, this can't be accurate. I currently game a Sun Mountain MPB with a 14-way top, and my Nike blades show way less bag chatter since I've had them refinished. Maybe the new chrome is harder...but my money is on the 14-way top reducing bag chatter.

The CFB bottom Four 5's will fit on a Speed Cart. I never tried one without the CFB to tell how much different they are. There is one thing with the base design that can be annoying when trying to couple a Four 5 with a Speed Cart - the bag is attached to the base only by the rivets that are spaced through the material around the base. There are spots between the rivets where the material at the bottom of the bag will catch on the bottom bracket of the Speed Cart when lifting the bag in and out of the brackets. There are places where you can actually stick your finger under the edge of the bag material and touch the grips of the clubs! This may not be an issue when using as a carry or riding cart bag but it can be a real pain when trying to load it onto a Speed Cart.

Overall it's not a very well made bag in the end. I think the OP makes a very good point, and Sun Moutain does give off the image of being a "walking" oriented company, IMO. It's natural to assume they might take a look at how their products integrate together. Again, in my experience I bought and sold a four 5 within a few months, seeing bad construction and just not getting a good value in my mind. For the OP, I do have a Bag Boy pushy, and I like it!

So true about knowing your own products and how they work together. You'd think that would be marketing 101, but many golf companies get too far removed in board rooms and don't golf enough apparently.

I just got the 2011 SCB DLX. Like everything else in this world, I was expecting the quality to go down considerably to chase higher profits. (I have used one of the original SCB's now for about 7 trouble-free years until the apparel pocket zipper FINALLY gave out on me this year.) The new ones feel pretty well made. The old one the material was VERY thick and if it got wet became totally water-logged like a sponge. If the slightly lighter fabric of the new one is better in that regard, I'll consider it a wash. But there are no loose strings on the 2011 anywhere. No bad seams on mine. The top organizes the clubs nicely. Ample pockets. Logically placed. I dunno... I expect it to hold my clubs nicely for 2011.

My response was just that it was possible to know if a particular bag fits on a push cart before buying. Either ask on a forum like this, call the company, or find a shop where you can throw the bag on the speed cart to see first hand. That was the part I didn't understand was all.
