Ping ISI series

I'm thinking about going back in time with my next irons
I've been playing the MX-23's for a couple of years now, but I'm thinking about going back to Pings. I've had Eye 2's and Zing 2's in the past and really liked them. I've always been drawn to the ISI line, but never pulled the trigger. I just like how they are styled, and I like the feel of them when I hit my buddies set a couple of years ago. I'm not a fan of the "plastic medallion" offerings from Ping. I need everbody to think back in time for me and tell me what you think about the ISI line. Am I just crazy for wanting to go backwards in an iron? Ping says that I can still get a full set from the factory, but I will probably ebay a set if I decide to do this. Let me know what you think and try not to hammer me too bad LOL.

Same here, the ISI-s is easily my favorite iron aesthetically. I played them for about 3 years, sold them during a bad spell of play and I've regretted it ever since. I didn't get another set soon after because their replacements (Cally X-14 Pro's) were also excellent irons that I should not have parted with either :drinks: . I also called Ping to see if they still have ISI-s heads in my specs (3-PW, S1, S3 - blue dot) and they do, if I can justify the cost while they still have them I'll pull the trigger for sure. I loved the Eye 2's as well but none of the Ping offerings since the ISI-s have really appealed to me (I5's are growing on me though despite the medallion). I play the MX-23's and they're the best set of irons I've owned, but the ISI-s are a close 2nd. The 23's are quite a bit softer, I thought the Ping's felt excellent but in different way - a very satisfying, firm click at impact almost like some Titleist forgings I've hit. I like offset in my irons because it seems to help me hit a draw, even though the ISI-s is a bit of a player's cavity back they have significant offset even in the shorter irons (more than the 23's if memory seves). I check EBAY periodically for a set also but if I do get another set I want all 10 irons I listed with matching serials so it's unlikely I'll find a set with the 2 wedges that I listed. It's definitely the only set I'd play with matching wedges - I really liked the ISI-s wedges.

Damn this thread, I had almost forgotten how much I want another set ;) .

It's funny you mentioned this Hoosiervolunteer but I made that same switch (MX-23's to ISI's) about 4 months ago. I had my whole set stolen (including my old ISI's) about a year ago and decided to update my bag so I tried the MX-23's. Actually, I tried numerous iron sets but the MX-23's were in my bag the longest. I loved the feel of MX-23's but I never really got over my ISI's so I switched back.

Maybe it's the comfort level (I played ISI's since 2002) that made me go back. I also went back to a Taylormade 540XD driver with a UST Proforce shaft because my scores were getting higher.

I tried everything new out there from $300 shafts to numerous 460 cc drivers to multiple irons. I just kept going back to the old faithfuls.

It worked for me, maybe it'll work for you too!

You gentlemen all stink...

I have been reminiscing recently about how much I missed my ISI irons. I played mine for 5 years from 97-02 and I regret getting rid of them to this day. I am constantly searching ebay for that set to show up one day that offers me identical specs. I will be patient, I will wait... I want my Blue Dot +1/2'' back. I grew up with the ISI-S, but now I am thinking maybe the BeCU or the BeNi... We will see, but still to this day these were my favorite and I think one of Ping's best set's ever made!

I always liked the look of the ISI-S and decided at the start of the year to sell my RAC LT's as I needed more forgiveness.

I bought a 2nd hand set from golfbidder in the UK. They rated the irons 7 out of 10. When I got them I couldnt beleive how stupid I was to think i'd like these. They are like shovels on a pole. Absolutely no feel to them. I was lucky that golfbidder offered a 7 day money back gaurantee. I sent them back the day after I got them.

Granted I was switching from a smaller iron. But technology has moved on so much since these irons came out. I guess if you like the look and feel go with them. Just remember though that all Ping irons come as D0 swingweight as standard. I'm 90% sure that Mizuno's come out heavier maybe D2?

I've actually just bought a set of BeCu Eye2s, that will be getting a tryout when i get home from work next week. I have to say i was never a big fan of the ISI. It is probably my least favourite looking Ping iron since the Eye 2. I had a set 2-W in nickel that i played 98-99, but just never really took to them. The I5 is a much better club, or if you want to go retro copper Eye 2 are hard to beat.

I agree the Eye 2's are the best looking clubs but I can't agree that the ISI's are the worst.

The Zing's are definitely the ugliest, hands down!

those irons like tight! i realize this is new info and pics and all, but any word on whether these will come to retail?

good golly i hope they do come to retail! To be honest, they are probably just custom exclusively for Fred because they look identical to the 300's aside from the BStone stamps.

If they do come to retail, ill have to sell the wife or something to buy those!!!!!

:man_in_love:

Those are the most blandest, boringest irons that I have seen, seriously.

I don't see any innovation in design or ground breaking technology here.

Wow! Those irons are like Jennifer Garner. Kind of plain looking, but somehow hot as hell! ;)

I've been playing the BeCu ISI's for the last couple months and have really enjoyed them. I have the 3-W, S, S2, S3, and L wedges so can pick and choose pretty well. I was extremely impressed with the playability of the wedges, but get along with all of the irons.

From the Ping R&D's perspective, this was said to be their favorite iron--a great blend of the Eye2's playability and the Zing2's forgiveness, and I'd have to agree. The toplines are very thin for a cavity and the offset is easy enough to get over. Aside from the Zing 2's, I thought these to be some of the uglier Pings until I started playing them. Now I wouldn't trade for the Eye2's, +/no+'s, or Eye2 +'s in any material.

After a particularly bad round (oddly enough--the one that MrParr!Noid was there to watch) I tried to switch back to my XXIO's, but severely missed the Ping's playability and appearance at address. Maybe I'll change my screen name to beruoISI. :cheesy:

I must have been one of the few people who liked the Zing series. I just thought they performed and i like the thicker topline. Different strokes I guess.

I thought that you forgot about the Zing series when you made your comment but I guess that's why they make different models.

My Ping progression

I3 O-size

I3 Plus

G2

Zing2

There have been others in between. Ping has been very very good to me. I don't know why, but the Zing2 have been my favorite to date. I bought them brand new in May from Discount Dan's. I just bought a set of Mizuno MX 23 but have not even given them a test swing. The Zing2 may not be the prom queen, but you know they are a sure thing.

I recently picked up a used set of ISI Be copper. I switched from Titleist blades. Has been a remarkably smooth transition. I really like the clubs and I am searching for Ping wedges. Currently wedges are eye 2+. I am hitting the ball longer and getting a lot more forgiveness. ISIs are solid clubs. I would strongly recommend them.

anyone have a pic of isi's at address.. just curious of the offset.

abewley, if it's not too late for you I'll try to get some pics at address tomorrow. Say 3, 7, W, and L? Do you need any side profiles too? I do have a bunch of pics in my WITB thread (link in my sig), but they are all in the bag pics--lazy that day. :man_in_love:

Thanks George!

way back in I believe 2001 when I was still playing the ISI's is when my name originated... it kind of went together and it was when I was back on GO... Well fast forward to 2006 and I am comfortable with the name, but please don't Harp on a good idea with the name ;)
