Where ya qualifying at and how'd you do?

 

 

Im trying to qualify in buffalo... Phillip francis was suppose to play there but he won the U.S Junior so that opens up another qualifying spot basically.

 

 

My buddy is in a qualifier today still waitin to see how he did.

The number they take depends on how many people there are at the site. I tried to qualify for the US Mid-AM at Southern Hills one year. There were 190+ people and the USGA had 9 spots up for grabs. I missed by one shot! ;) I've gotten too old and have a bad knee to do the "walking 36 holes in August" thingee, so I don't do the US AM anymore.....just the Mid-Am.

 

Typically, there are 75-90 players at each site and they take 3-4.

PS - here are a few tips/tricks I have learned over the years of about walking 36 holes in the heat. I never have the below problems when walking 18...but walking 36 is different!

 

1) Obviously - drink a lot of water! (DUH!) However, there is a product called "Emergen-C" that is an Super Energy Booster with lots of vitamins, minerals and electrolytes that will do you wonders after your first 18 holes and your final 9 holes. Add a pack of this stuff to a 1/2 bottle of water, shake, and drink it down! (I drink one after 9 holes when walking 18.) I buy it at Whole Foods, but you can do a search on the web for other sales locations.

2) Take a few potassium tablets the night before and the morning of the rounds.....esp. if you have a tendency to cramp. (I don't cramp, but why risk it!!)

3) Chaffing prevention! This may sound gross, but after it happened to me once - I did it every year! Lube your rear end! :man_in_love: If you are in an area of the country where it is very hot, your butt crack and thighs can begin to chafe after 18+ holes making the last nine hole miserable! Lube "areas" with a light coat of Vasaline in the locker room right before you head out.

4) Powder your feet with an athletic footpowder to prevent excessive sweating of your feet.

5) Blisters. I don't walk a lot (due to my knee), so my feet were never in walking shape. After about 20 holes, I would get big blisters on the balls of my feet.....even in well broken in shoes. If you think you may get blisters, go to the drug store and buy a product called MoleSkin and cut it to fit the balls of your feet. ....but do not apply. Store them in your bag (labeled left and right) and be prepared to put the MoleSkin on if you feel blisters beginning to form.

6) Use your umbrella for shade!

7) Hire a caddy!!

I caddied for a friend at King's Country Club near Fresno, CA. They had 2 spots...spot 1 shot 71 / 65 and spot 2 shot 66 / 71.

 

My buddy shot 73 / 72....decent play but not good enough. We played with the # 2 guy and after he shot a 66 he started his second round Eagle, birdie, Eagle, birdie....but then gave a few back going in. That was an impressive start...the kid can play, he's a Freshman at Fresno State. I'll be watching his name to see how he does.
