Helps with swing plane & variation helps with coming outside in.

I was wondering if anyone had the specifics for this drill. Like, were should the shaft be. IN front of the ball, off your back foot, of your front foot(doubt that one)?? Like many people I have a little bit of a fade when my driver gets "off". The rest of my clubs I hit straight and work left and right and all that jazz. Just on my bad days my drivers miss is a fade. Any help?

VJ's drill's will make you hit an even bigger fade them.

 

He sets a shaft up parallel to his feet between he and the ball. A bit Closer to the ball as a reminder to swing back on a straight plane. He also sets a water bottle to the right of the ball when you are looking from behind, like you were looking down the line in a swing analysis. To the right and slightly up, towards the target. This allows him to swing in, and left. These moves and drills allow him swing hard left and not hit a hook or a pull.

Never mind, Vijay actually puts it to the inside of his target line about 2 feet back of his right foot. It helps him stay on plane in his swing. But he also said that you can put it on the outside of your target line to help from coming over the top. He also said he ditched the water bottle. Picked up a free cd with all this info.

I'm a HUGE fan of Vijay, and I've spent the last two years watching him practice at the Shell Houston Open. Here's the drill:

 

Shaft down at his feet aiming right at the target, with a second shaft behind just under the plane he wants to come down

 

 

 

Vijay's big problem is getting too flat, with this drill, if he gets underplane on the down swing, he hits the shaft coming through, if he gets too flat on the backswing, he hits it going back.

 

 

 

 

How do you know what plane to set the shaft on? Place your club next to it as it would be at address and make sure the shafts are parallel.

 

 

He omitted the water bottle drill for this video, but there's usually one to the outside and just ahead of the golf ball to keep him from going to inside to out through impact and going in to in.

 

He's the most efficient practicer I've ever seen, he addresses every one of his swing faults with this drill.

 

This is a VERY hard drill. It sounds simple, but it's a bit scary once you get everything set up. I'd make sure you know what you're doing or at least go VERY slow the first couple of times to avoid injury or club breakage.

Actually he swings over the shaft.

 

However, if you stick the shaft on the other side of the target shaft, it will keep you from coming over the top.

Ya, inside the target line(shaft between him ball) would mean he swings over the shaft. Anyone ever really use this for a while? Thoughts??

I tried this the other day at the range (as I have been going from out-to-in) and broke the ferrule on my 7 iron. Doh!

Something people should understand is that Vijay uses a very shallow downswing plane angle. Same as Tiger, Scott, Hogan, Howell III, etc.

 

However you may not be someone who swings on a similar shallow plane. If any of you know the golfing machine, they use the elbow plane.

 

If you swing on a steeper downswing plane you will actually have to setup the shaft HIGHER than what your hands are at address. An example would be Ernie Els or David Toms.

Has anyone thought about using two shafts to make a gate to swing through along with the water bottle (or headcover etc)? I'm just thinking this is the next logical step.

Try one first.

 

When you see just how difficult it is, I think you'll think twice about the gate idea . . .

 

Just missing one shaft and the water bottle is damn hard.

The first time I try any combination of these methods I'm using an old MacGregor persimmon driver. I don't want to have to post some horror story here.
