Help choosing course in Phoenix area

Me and a friend will be in the Phoenix area playing golf Jan. 28, 29, 30. I'm scratch and he's a 4 handicap. Granted, we're expecting 6" of snow tonight and neither one of us have swung a club since October.

 

Friday - 36 @ ??

Saturday - Unlimited play at Golf Club of Estrella

Sunday - 18 at Superstition Mountain

 

My dilemma is where to play on Friday. We definitely want to get in 36 holes. The problem is, I'd really like to start the morning at Southern Dunes. Would we have time to play 18 at Southern Dunes and drive somewhere else to get in another 18? Is Scottsdale too far? Is Raven at South Mountain worth playing?

 

Any feedback would be greatly appreciated!

The Duke is in Maricopa, just a couple of miles from Southern Dunes. A fun to play, if not overly scenic (housing development) course. You would have time for lunch.

To drive from Maricopa to Scottsdale may be pushing it daylight wise to finish a second 18.

On the south side of Phoenix not far from Maricopa is Whirlwind (36-holes) that is pretty good. Raven @ S. Mountain is not one of my favorites, I actually like the Duke better.

Thanks. Based on their website, The Duke looks like a decent course. But every course looks good on their website. Good to hear someones personal experience.

I enjoy the Raven at South Mountain and the Legacy which is right next door also, probably the Legacy a little more. I also agree with tjy355 on Whirlwind it's close enough and even though I have yet to play the course I hear great things. Enjoy Southern Dunes it's one of my absolute favorite courses in the valley, I would love to hear your thoughts on it!

36 at the duke and southern dunes would be a good deal with limited driving between them.

I play The Duke frequently and as of last Sat, its in good shape, plus the food at their grill is really good. Also, Teakwoods in Maricopa is a good place for a beer and a bite after your round.


The fairways at the duke will look like a freaking highway after playing southern dunes lol

The Duke is a really fun course and would be a good pairing with Southern Dunes. The Duke has got some really wide fairways so it might be a better option to play first so you can shake off the rust.

Thanks for the feedback on The Duke course! If I can't figure out a way to play 36 at We Ko Pa at the discounted rate, then Southern Dunes / The Duke will be our 36 on day 1.

FYI, woke up to 6" of snow this morning in STL. Makes me even more excited to know I'll be playing golf in 70 degree weather in a week!

Decided to pass on WeKoPa this time around. We're going to do 18 at Southern Dunes and finish the day with 18 at The Duke.

Followed by unlimited play at Golf Club of Estrella and then 18 at Superstition Mountain before flying home.
