I'm kinda biased towards the MacGregor that's in my bag  I like the fact that for the price I can get a off the rack 420cc head that's 1* open rather then having to shell out $$$$ for tour product or play with a draw bias driver. Plus I enjoy the eardrum popping sound it makes when I really get a hold of one. :drinks:

One caveat though, the shaft makes a HUGE difference, its an entirely different driver with the YS 6.1 then with the NV 75.

There is no longest driver. There may be a head and shaft combo that is longest for me, but that combo might not suit you. In any case, all modern heads have the same COR and will be very close in distance.

Get fitted.

Cleveland 460 driver... long take my advice.

Agreed. No need to even go for the comp. The original is the best. Great sound, feel, and look at address (sits square). You will definitely tell when you don't hit one solid, but the ball will still find its way a long way down the fairway when you miss it. (I should know, that's all I do)

I'm going to repeat what I said earlier. Any differences in overall length will be minor. Here is a list of drivers I have owned since I started playing again in January. And I mean owned rather than just hit on a range at a demo day:

TM R7 Quad (4 different shafts)

TM R5 Draw

TM R5 Neutral

TM R510 TP

TM R5 TP

TM R7 425 (3 different shafts)

TM R7 460

Nike Ignite 410 (2 different shafts)

Nike SQ

Callaway FT-3 (2 different shafts)

Callaway X460

Cleveland HiBore (2 different shafts)

Cleveland Launcher

Cobra M Speed

Cobra F Speed

Cobra SZ460

Ping G5 (5 different shafts)

The longest was the original R7 Quad with the Max non-conforming head. This is illegal in the US but quite OK here in Australia. It is noticeably 10-20 yards longer and the only head I have tried that you would notice a distance difference with.

Every other head (depending on shaft) was about the same maximum distance on well-struck, well-aimed shots. The big difference was shot dispersion. Also known as straightness. Because of the way I hit my irons (big draw) I need a driver I can draw to keep the ball on the left hand side of the fairway. For me, this is the Ping G5 or the R7 Quad. I couldn't draw the FT-3 Draw to save myself.

There is no difference in length, just in shot shape.

However, there is a big difference in length when you add shafts to the equation. With my preferred Ping G5 head, I have found a 50 yard difference that can only be due to the shaft. I hit the G5/Diamana Blue combo shorter than my 3 wood, and way shorter than the same head with a 757. So you just never know.

I would suggest you find a head that gives you the shot shape you want and not worry about distance. Then match it with a shaft that gives you the launch angle and spin you need.

The constant recommendations of different heads and shafts are a complete waste of time.

My longest hits (conforming) have been with an original R7 and a Speeder 757x. My next longest and most consistent have been with a Ping G5 and Prolaunch S. But there is no way this would apply to you.

Cheers

Steve

That said, if you want the best value you can get brand new R5TP on eBay for under $200 now. Assuming you need an open face, that's pretty good.

I've heard good things about the new Adams 460 (no weight ports, I believe). I think you can get it for $100 from golfdiscount.

Specifically, I heard there was very little sidespin in launch monitor results. Of course, other clubs were also tested, including Taylormade, Ping, Titleist, MacGregor, and Tour Edge Exotics.

You would have to determine if the stock shaft would be appropriate for you.
