PROs using carry bags

I just saw Steve Flesch on TV and was suprise to see a carry bag instead of instead of those huge staff cart bags

 

Do golf companies allow the pros to choose what kind of bags they have during tournament play? Just found it strange to see the big guns having a carry bag.

Castle Pines is also very spread out from what I have been told. Duffy Waldorf is one regular tour player who uses a carry bag every week.

7600 yards and drastic elevation changes equals carry bags for most of the players this week. Add to the thin air the fact that it has been extremely humid. I would say that I saw no more than 15 staff bags being carried.

yea, i think so too. most of the cleveland guys were doing it and i think it is a smart choice to let the caddies have their health!

I haved played the international and walked the course many a time before. It is not an easy hike. I think that the caddies have a hard time with the ups and downs, and their pros just let them use the stand bags to make things a little easier.

That's odd about the Tour requiring the use of staff bags.

I have caddied on the PGA Tour and the players DO NOT have to use staff bags. It is in their best interest from their endorsement contracts to do so. There is a caddie union as well that helps to get this kind of stuff put in place. When the weather is really bad and they play 36 in one day, they push to have the caddies be able to carry the walking bags. Also, at that elevation it is very difficult to carry long distances. Every tournament I have carried in I use the stand bag on practice days and the staff bag on tournament days. But again, they don't have to use staff bags as a rule by the PGA Tour.

I just read that Taylor Made blog and it did say the thing about this being one of the only events that allowed carry bags but I still don't understand where this info is based. Do players have to petition the Tour to use a carry bag? I have not seen Duffy use a staff bag in years. A lot of your Monday Qualifiers and Section Qualifiers also have carry bags.

They are never required to in the first place! THEY DO NOT HAVE TO CARRY STAFF BAGS! Now, the players may have to strike a deal with the sponsors since the walking billboard is smaller!

Tour Pro's generally use "Tour" bags for two reasons: The amount of advertising potential + The amount of space it provides for equipment etc.

 

Ive never heard of any PGA Tour rule limiting them to just Tour bags ........ player agreements with their sponsors might stop them,maybe.

 

Its clearly just the business side of the company kicking in and getting the most bang-for-their-buck advertising wise.You'd want the same too if you signed these guys pay cheques

Duffy is The Man!!!! One of my favorite golfers. Love those colorful shirts he wears. Have followed him a few times when he's played in the Philly area. He gave one of his golf balls following his third round at the old Pennsylvania Classic. It reads "Beat Old Man Par" and he autographed it. He always uses one. I sent Taylor Made an e-mail asking for the rule about players using staff bags, I am anxiously awaiting a response.

I was at Castle Pines last week. One of the main reasons is the endorsements on the bag. Players are paid to have company logo's, home club logo's, etc.. on bags. Most players who used carry bags this week did not have sponsor logo's on the carry bags. Caused a ruckus with Bernhard Langer and Linde, one of his sponsors. He ended up getting a carry bag with all of the proper sponsors on Wednesday afternoon. You figure a company is paying someone to advertise and possibly seven days without their logo being shown is less of a return on their investment.

If I remember correctly DiMarco use a carry when he won at Dubai. I think his old lady huffed for him, and the normal percentage for the caddie was probably exceeded. I.E. he must have lost money.

Correct it's funny though, when you go to Titleist.com and look at Duffy's profile he is listed using the S62 Staff bag. I know breaking news not playing what he is reported to be playing. Fact is there are countless times when you can go back and look at a player using a carry bag. I know that DiMarco was just mentioned since his wife caddied for him. When John Huston shot 28 under several years back at Hawaii he was using a carry bag because he had his sister on the bag. We could go on and on for days about it.

I don't think there is a rule at all. Think of all of the amateurs that play and lesser known pros who you see and they don't all have staff bags. Most of the amateurs use collegiate bags or something similar.

 

Also, on the players who have done it, Chris DiMarco used the USA Hoofer XTREME in Dubai this year. His wife was caddying for him, I know, before I get all the comeback..
